Dive into the depths between 90-132 ft (27-40m) to explore a mesmerizing deep reef in Bauan Batangas, PH, a vibrant marine haven, a Diver’s paradise and also a favorite spot for local fishermen. However, beneath the beauty lies a concerning issue - discarded fishing lines entangling Sea Fans, marine animals like turtles, and even sharks.
Sea Fans are pivotal in maintaining reef health, serving as natural filters and providing shelter and food for a myriad of marine life. Yet, entangled in plastic, their ability to fulfill these vital functions is jeopardized, disrupting the delicate balance of the entire reef ecosystem.
In this dive, we encountered a Sea Fan brutally sliced in half, ensnared in fishing lines. Shaped like large nets, Sea Fans capture plankton and offer habitats for diverse marine species. However, their intricate structure makes them susceptible to entanglement with discarded fishing lines and ghost nets.
To prevent further harm, we made it our mission to meticulously remove and cut away the lines and nets ensnared in the Sea Fan's branches. Fishing lines and ghost nets, if left unattended, act as an underwater saw, gradually cutting away at the Sea Fan with the currents.
With utmost care, we extracted most of the lines and nets, being mindful of our bottom time due to the depths requiring a series of decompression stops for a safe ascent.
Beyond this Sea Fan, our mission sheds light on the broader impact of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems.
Ocean clean-up shouldn’t just be an annual event; it's a mindset shift. If we embrace the idea of "Make Every Dive a Clean-Up Dive" (MED-CUD) and proactively remove debris during each dive, we can collectively make a significant difference. This video is a call to action, urging us to adopt a new mindset and take responsibility for the well-being of our oceans. Join us in making every dive count, ensuring a cleaner, healthier future for our marine ecosystems.
Thank you for being a part of this crucial journey.
