Here's a quick video on building and waterproofing MDF subwoofer box for a customer's outboard motor speedboat audio upgrade.
Customer choses to equip the JBL Club Marine MS10LW 10 inch marine subwoofer for his boat's audio upgrade. It is my first time to build an enclosure that will be exposed to all kinds of elements like water, air and moisture. So the box must be resistant to any of those elements without sacrificing its musical output and aesthetics. So the fist thing in mind is to build a cube-shaped sealed box since customer wanted the box to be placed in a space within the bow area of the speedboat. The subwoofer has a factory built-in RGB LED light effect that turns on when hooked to a 12v circuit. A combination of wiring the RGB LED light to produce a certain colour and the customer wanted the colour blue. So the subwoofer system must be wired in a 4-strand cable to enable that RGB lighting feature.
Without any further ado, let's get this thing water tight and banging!
00:00 - Unboxing the brand new JBL Club Marine MS10LW multi-element 10" subwoofer. RGB Light LED colours that lights up when hook up to 12v in a combination for a certain colour output.
00:45 - Assembly of all MDF panels. Gluing, nailing and routing of the edges. The baffle is doubled to give the box a flush mount look.
01:35 - First waterproofing step is applied by brushing generous amount of sanding sealer diluted with lacquer thinner.
01:40 - Next waterproofing step is to cover the entire enclosure with Bondo body filler. Wet sanding every imperfections to every layer. And wet sanding is necessary to achieve a piano smooth finish. About 3 layers of body filler was applied to ensure water-tight.
01:55 - 3rd step in waterproofing is by painting using a urethane or acrylic automotive paint. A layer of primer then couple coats of main paint colour. Then lastly, 3 coats of clear top coat.
02:15 - Gluing a rubber mat for shoe soles can be used as non-slip rubber footing on the base of the subwoofer box.
02:35 - 4 strand royal cable is used and secure using a cable gland. First pair of strands will be hooked for the subwoofer and the other pair is for the 12v speaker RGB LED light.
02:40 - Neutrik speakon connectors were used for easy coupling and decoupling. Speakon connectors has 4 pins and are weather-proof.
03:00 - One last waterproofing step is to stick the rubber tape gasket that comes with the woofer before heavy stuffing the enclosure with polyfiber fill to resonate the box lower notes.
03:40 - Screw down the woofer using stainless steel Allen hex bolts and T nuts.
03:55 - Sticking the JBL logo is somewhat oddly satisfying.
04:10 - Finally, rub and buff the newly built marine subwoofer box finish to a mirror smooth shine!
I will be covering the installation so be sure to subscribe to my channel and see you on the beach real soon!
