Early imprinting and a highly developed "smell memory-bank" help the Salmon find it’s way home to natal waters. The Salmon’s body has to undergo some drastic changes as it makes its way back up stream to spawn; they lose the layer of protection to their skin causing loss of scales and growth of harmful fungus. Their physical appearance and color changes to both better blend in with their environment and to attract females.
