My first vehicle was an 86 Grand Wagoneer my dad and I bought for $125 and a case of beer. I got the cash, he got the beer. It had an engine fire and was really rusty but had perfect leather interior. I learned a lot about how to fix it because of him. Should have kept it but it the frame started getting pretty crispy and the transmission started slipping. Still have a soft spot in my heart about as big as one in the frame for those old full size jeeps.

My dad had a 1966 Jeep Wagoneer about the same color as well. It had a badge for a 327 V8 but someone that owned the Jeep before my dad swapped in an AMC 360 engine which put the starter on the other side. Every time you went over a bump the Driveline would come up and knock out the starter. We had to lift the truck to avoid buying starters. Surprisingly I use this vehicle in high school and I used it for a lot of drag races in my small town of Klamath Falls. One quite a few races with it with the 3 speed on the column. I finally ended up rolling the Jeep later on. This video brought back a lot of memories especially when you open up the door and we saw the interior. It was exactly the same

Please, please keep it just like that. Has SO much character. Quite a few of these, in the Cleveland area, back in the day. Sold for multi-use/multi-season vehicles. Snow plow in the winter or just 4x4 through the snow. Then in the summer, go camping or tow your boat down to Lake Erie. But they rusted almost immediately, from the salt. Next door neighbor had a white one in the late 60's. Love it's originality. No, you cannot keep every vehicle you buy, but this one has your name ALL over it. JT Otlando, Floriduh

Had a '63 Willy's Wagoneer for a while back in the first half of the 80's. It was from Indian Hills, Colorado. I bought it for $300 to just have something to explore around in. And camping of course. Someone had transplanted a Pontiac 389 into it, which made the Wagoneer a torque monster beast. Sometime on;y driven though. I worked at Coors Porcelain Co at the time. But in the winter the Willy's stayed home. And I took other vehicles from Wheatridge into Golden, on icy Hwy 58 by the Brewry. I drive a Ram 1500 Quadcab 4wd Ecodiesel these days. I liked the size of the Willy's, and would have loved a small turbodiesel. I currently have a Jeep ZJ that may see a 2.8 Cummins repower kit in it next year.

Had a family friend who would make her boys (my fellow kids) close that tailgate after grocery shopping because that thing weighed tons, many is the trip home from the base PX that was made with tailgate left down because mom couldn't lift it and just left it for the two mile trip home . It was kind of a badge of honor when you were big enough or strong enough to close it by yourself. They taught three boys and girl how to drive on it in about three different states before Eastern road-salt finally ate enough of the body that it wasn't worth repairing anymore. Another badge of honor for the kids was to keep it running (mostly pouring huge amounts of oil and ATF into it).

My 1951 Studebaker 2R5 truck has the same style rear axle. It's a PITA to service. Also, we've had several Wagoneers and Cherokee Chiefs and they had a pair of metal bars that function as springs at the bottom of the tailgate to make it easier to open and close. Maybe they are missing or you need to lubricate the hinges. Even when rusted to nearly falling off I could close them with one hand.

If you start cutting or modifying it. Suspension lift on 38’s with a lot of power and torque for crawling. But, it’s pretty nice. If you don’t modify it at all. Leave it original and just spruce it up a little. One of those pop out tent roof rack things, winch, big tires, big power, regeared and a lift. Could be an amazing cross country camping trail rig. All the way to Alaska staying off pavement. Except for supplies and to replace broken parts.

Man, how much does a Wagoneer like that cost these days? That does bring back tons of memories. My grampa had a 74 Jeep J10 that my mother got in 1984 when he passed away. Front of the J10 was identical. That Jeep was awesome despite being a rustbucket and never running right. Not the Jeep's fault my grampa's idea of a good day was leaving the Jeep on the beach after putting his boat in the bay while the tide came in. Had the AMC 360 v8 in it. Thing was legendary at my school after my mother used it to pull a full sized schoolbus full of kids from a muddy ditch one day, after the tow truck that was sent couldn't get traction. Dang... the feels.

The crossbar for the rear engine mount even bolted right up to the 2nd set of holes on the frame since the 400 was offered that year. i also swapped in a set of axles from a 78 j-20 which were much stronger axles (44hd front & 60 ff rear). the diffs were even offset still like the originals.

The rear axle in those Jeep and International trucks etc use a Morse taper which fail too often. The taper slips and ruins the axle and you don't know it until far too late. So, dump the axle and install a GM axle of your choice maybe an 8 inch. Yes, the wagon will no longer be stock but you can keep the old axle for someone that wants to make it stock again. :)

you can actually convert any ranger (98+) or explorer (96-01) to manual front hubs using 98-00 ranger front hub and cv axles and a set of manual hubs from the aftermarket, as for had a vacuum system on the hubs of these trucks. I did it to my explorer and it came on my ranger and it really makes a difference in wear, road noise, and gas mileage.

AMC = All Marques Combined. My '84 Wagoneer had an AMC 360 V8, a Mopar 727 trans, and Ford carburetor and belt-driven accessories. Ford brakes, too, IIRC. Pre-Chrysler Jeeps are an exercise in learning cross-catalog part numbers. Make a tow rig out of it. Great room to keep tools and gear secure and dry. First I was thinking a LS engine followed by a 6 speed auto (which is what you might be familiar with). But than It would maybe be a challenge for you to do a 4bt Cummins.(Not the 6 cyl , so many out there). As far as being worried about keeping pure it seems the factory was not worried bastard-izing it back in the day with different drivetrain combos. Definitely keep the 4WD though. This is Nomad, and that's my take. P.S. try to keep the ratchet straps and gaff tape to a minimum. Nomad out!
