www.dynamis.training/restraint - What is good restraint training? It should have a strong legal basis and robust theoretical underpinning. It has an emphasis on non-physical resolution of incidents wherever possible. It must have a value base - "treating people with dignity and showing them respect, even in the most difficult of moments" is ours.
It must protect vulnerable people. Because of the risks of violence, it must take a pragmatic view of personal safety. It should teach staff how to approach or disengage safely from clients or patients. It needs to have a methodology for both the control and restraint phases of an incident, using non-harmful methods wherever possible. To reduce injury risk for staff, it should take into account the manual handling best practice guidance.
Teamwork is hugely important for restraint interventions, so the system should offer good teamwork models. Trainers should be competent enough to offer the staff innovative and pragmatic solutions to complex problems while referring to law and guidance.
The goal is effective prevention and management of violence and aggression (PMVA) for all who work in health and social care.
