When my dad worked at the Library of Congress during the 60s, 70s and 80s, I had a chance to try Senate Bean Soup. I just made a half-recipe of my mom's version yesterday (oh, I forgot the bay leaf!), and call it Stormy Day Bean Soup. I always use carrots but not the potatoes. Thank you for taping the recipe for us.

An easier version is to omit the potatoes and add Better than Bullion Chicken base to the water. Also, ordinary cubed ham works fine instead of the hock.

I made this almost as per your recipe. I omitted the potatoes and took a stick blender and pureed maybe 10-20% of the beans to give the soup a nice hearty broth. It turned out great and made a big batch. I'll probably freeze 1/2. I read somewhere that the Senator who suggested the original recipe was from Idaho, so hence the addition of potatoes. It's funny that I omitted that one ingredient but I honestly wonder how much of difference in flavor it makes?
@melcancook

Manch -- I just made a double batch of it over the weekend and froze half. I adore the potatoes, but, since you pureed some of the beans, you probably got a similar textural experience (since the starch in the potatoes naturally thicken the broth).

Question. Do the beans get mushy after so much cooking? Since you presoak them first I would think too much heat would cause them to disintegrate more or less. I really like this and will try it for sure.

Put the meat in a bowl and use a hand mixer. It will perfectly shred and you will get double the amount of meat. I do this with hock me and I do it with chicken that needs to be shredded or any meat that you want to shred.
