@@milesleaver4968 Corny, certainly, but the low-budget critique levelled at _Sharpe_ is unjustified -sure it could only portray great Napoleonic battles at the skirmish level, but the 90s weren’t a time of subscription channels like Netflix and Amazon able to throw many millions at a single episode. Quite a few famous productions have been bankrupted by the cost of their costumes (David Lynch’s _Dune_ the most famous) and all those countless shako, breeches and tunics, filmed in foreign locations, will have cost a bomb.

I've been in that situation twice. Once as a soldier with a comrade and once as a cop with a guy thrown from a motorbike. The single most harrowing thing you could have is to cradle someone otherwise "healthy" bleeding out and dying in your arms. That scene was too close for comfort. The first time I was as young as perkins, the last I was as old as Harper.

That scene is intensely uncomfortable as it had a realism to it within a series that was a bit comic book heroic at times. How Perkins meets his end as a result of betrayal while trying to save someone he thought a comrade makes it all even worse. And boy that, _”mothers never leave you,”_ line can’t help but put a lump in your throat. Harper’s subsequent understandable rage is something to behold.

@@fishyc150 _Challo... mŷ name is Iñigo Montoya..._ There’s a scene in _Saving Private Ryan (1998)_ where the medic gets liver-shot, and delirious with morphine he calls for his mother, at the very end; with a look of slight shame from his comrades, about that moment, avoiding each other’s gaze. It’s akin to the “terrible high-pitched screaming” Quint recalls, from the USS Indianapolis’s shark victims, which he himself mirrors as the Great White gets him in _Jaws (1975)._ And there’s genuine psychological theory that these cries in violent death agonies, are the mind regressing in panic to infancy calling for maternal care as we all did as a baby. That, to me, is what makes it so poignant here in _Sharpe,_ that’s what kicks you right in the guts: there’s no shame or embarrassment to any of it, as Perkins dies, just compassion and comfort from his comrades within the Chosen Men.

He was only in one book, ditto Harris and Moore. (Richard Moore was actually a Napoleonic Society re-enactor who acted as a consultant to the TV series, so they gave him a few non-speaking cameos.) None of them appeared in the original novels. Sharpe's Battle was the first novel published after the series aired (the previous twelve pretty much stood complete prior to that) so all of a sudden we have characters from the series appearing and Sharpe spontaneously developing a Yorkshire accent, using northern colloquialisms (the original twelve novels stated that he came from London and had him talking like that) and calling Harper "Pat", when in the novels he never used that word once until then. He either called him Harper or, if he was feeling informal, Patrick.
