Well he had to go back to retrieve it, he even referenced that later in the series when he told new recruits that anyone who fired off their rifles with the ramrod inserted would be asked to get it back.

The ball was behind that ramrod as well, so the fellow was shot, too. The powder burns Harper received came from the increased pressure of the ramrod pushing some of the blast back out of the vent so the flash blew onto his face.
@timengineman2nd714

@@BogeyTheBear Actually there was no bullet! He also didn't prime the pan either, trusted that his well maintained rifle's flint would strike the Frizzen and would put a spark thru the hole and into the barrel setting off the charge. You'll notice that when he reloaded without the ramrod, to seat the ball he tapped the rifle butt on the ground a few times..... (PS a few reinactors did this and it works, you loose accuracy at range quickly, but at those ranges you're aiming at a formation that basically shoulder to shoulder and several ranks deep. (French used columns .vs. lines like the British.)

Machismo, probably. Cavalry were considered to be a higher-status unit, and one of the ways they reinforced this perception was by cultivating a culture of risk-taking and never backing down from a fight (which is part of the reason why cavalry officers had a reputation for getting into a lot of duels). If they'd both lived, you just know the man who advanced second would have got a lot of ribbing back at the mess hall.

Spitting inside the barrel can actually kill you, even without ball. Musket barrels get so hot that the power inside can ignite by simply resting in it. It is a wonderful way to blow your head off, when you open your mouth to spit.
