I worked for a big consumer electronics company from 1982-2005 and one of our accounts was Rotel out of North Reading Massachusetts.Common failures were transistors and fusible resistors just like you said.

Hi, I would like you to help me see how I can solve a problem or two that I have in my rotel RA-930AX. Let me explain. The first question arises that when I turn on the amplifier the speakers make a small noise, like a "PLOF "A serious sound but not very strong, yes. This sound when turning off the amplifier makes it less loud .. Is this normal ?: The second doubt is that sometimes when you turn on the amplifier or after a while working, either one or both channels do not sound or they crack. I have observed that they return to the correct normality if you turn the tone selector and return it to its position original. What can be the fault? ..Do I need to take him to a technician? I have the schematic of the apparatus. My language is Spanish and I have problems following your explanation of the video.Thanks for your help

It was advice from Motorola engineering, that when mounting the transistors to a heat sink, a S bend in the leads will stop the leads from pulling out of the package from expatiation and contraction from the heat sink. Also the solder leads on the board will not be distorted and pulled..

I have a somewhat similar Rotel, and you have to open it up every 18 months or so and spray out the selector and tone controls with Deoxit to prevent channel drop-out.
@JordanPier

Make sure to use faderlube, not regular deoxit. Learned the hard way it wears pots down faster. Use the deoxit shield after the faderlube and it will last longer.

''A HiFi brand nowadays? It has been a HiFi brand as long as I've known it..ie since 1970. Rotel have always managed to offer a budget integrated that was competitive, and often received a 'Best Buy' award in the category. The RA820 was very similar to this and was a NAD 3020 competitor - it had a long production life and was very well received. Well made, reliable and a good sound, if not exceptional, always good value for money. Rotel, a HiFi brand for the last 50 years (at least)..😺😸😿😾🐱👤

That's no excuse. I could not work in such filth. Most motor mechanics are cleaner. Also one should take the amp outside and give it a blowing and use a paint brush and remove the many years of dust and dirt. I also clean the PCs i repair ,Its professional and dust can be conductive. Also scratching the PCB board instead of alcohol clean with an old toothbrush. But that just me. I know I am being horrible. You will most probably find his car is just as filthy inside and out. Sorry. I hate sloppiness. I just want to jump into the video take the amp and clean the amp thoroughly for him.

Seems to be a common theme re test gear - filthy. How does it get so? I fault diagnose / repair industrial and audio equipment in 'dirty' environments, with some older test gear too, that never gets this way. Clean boards is a basic start.. Not even a self-respecting motor mechanic works on filthy mechanical, let alone electrical / electronic equipment. Why 'o why? 'Busy' is no excuse - That would do my head in working in a dirty chaotic shop.

Great video! I am repairing a Rotel RA-02 amp. I am an amateur repairperson. Both output fuses blown. However the amp transistors (left to right when looking at front of the amp) is C3182N (NPN), D600K (PNP), A1265N (NPN), B817 (NPN), D600K (PNP) and D1047 (NPN). The C3182 and D1047 has faulty readings. Should I replace all the transistors? The transistors in your video are PNP instead, could be due to a different model? APpreciate your response!
@JordanPier

It's a good idea to replace them all. If one shorts, since they are direct coupled the shorted one will hurt the others. Even if they don't test bad, they have been injured and should be replaced
@williamwong5627

You have got it all mixed up. Remember this simple information for japanese transistors. 2SA and 2SB are PNP, 2SC and 2SD are NPN.

Thanks,one more like,i have a big ROTEL that i had to do the same many (18?) years ago; i also doubled the big caps ,and doubled the heat sink area(bolted another one to it--i used to BUILD and SELL power amps for cars,from scratch,using the hitachi ha-1388,38 years ago ); it works GREAT, POWERFUL CLEAN sound --DOORS POWERWOLF CIVIL WAR..dozens of others

The signal path is mostly direct coupled, so no need for recapping. These typically suffer from bad soldering, loose connections and touchy controls. If you choose to resolder bad connections, use a 50w pencil iron and 60/40 solder .025" dia
