Absolutely great videos. Your series on the steering column reassembly really helped a lot. Previous owner was really naughty and I had to unf**k several things. Very helpful, thanks so much! Cheers!

I still had to make a long extension to reach down to mark the timing indicator and go in from the top though. Can't help but to wonder what the vertical tube sticking up just to the right of the timing marks are for? Maybe a mount for a dealer timing setup jig?

@coombsy16 it's possible the outer ring of your HMB has slipped and is not indicating true TDC of the #1piston.

@buddycraigg well it is at TDC, the piston is on compression, and is at the top of the stroke. turns out it's misfiring, my coil and distributor are messed. coil's cracked and the distributor pickup coil is defective. at least thats what i beleve. timing is no problem. it's i dont have spark 1/2 the time.

if you do not jump the pin, then the ECM will be in control of the timing, and will move it all over the place. It would be like unplugging the vacuum line on an old distributor. you still have to set the base timing.

I found it a LOT easier to turn and mark the harmonic balancer by laying on my side with the car on the ground and getting my socket wrench on it by moving the rubber flap behind the passenger side wheel. Saves getting the nasty fiberglass engine compartment insulation all over my hands and arms too.

@chueko7 first guess is a vacuum leak.

why do you need to short the two pins to each other???
@NullH3ad

bah you can just reach over with one hand and use the other to hold the gun. It's neat to watch it the harmonic balancer move wile you adjust the distributer :D

Do you time that with the car up to temp or cold?

hey nice video, let me ask you one thing: if you disconnect the connector wich is on one of the 4 wires that run between the ignition module and the ecm, does that affect your engine performance? this connector is used to set ignition timing on some GM cars. I have a firebird with the same engine, thanx.

I have driveability issues with this engine i suspect a broken wire on some of that cables. You would do me a big favor if you could check it out ,cause this engine is driving me nuts.
