Cool project. Good job filming it. Are you going to cover the tops of the containers at all? Water may be running down those inside walls during rain. I liked how you used the skid steer to set the trusses.

Andrew Camarata thanks man! I’m gonna do some type of flashing where the base plate meets the container I’ve got a few ideas for that plus the boxes are sloped outward a little bit. The only covering I’m thinking for the containers themself is maybe that thick silver paint they put on camper roofs because I still wanna keep some of my light materials up there (slinky pipe waterline that sort of thing) thanks for watching I’m a big fan of yours!

Yes, you should install a cover over the top of your two containers. With all of the trees and falling leave around your structure and combine that with rain and morning dew over time will cause corrosion of your container roofs.
@jwfinkler388

James Hanson - I agree with you; the trusses should have extended to the outer edges of the cargo containers to protect their roof surfaces. Coupling the moisture with the tannic acid that will leech from the leaves, the flat container roof could rust through within a few years. Unscrew the bottom edge of the roof material and slide additional roofing materials underneath that will extend over the outer edges of the containers and refasten both layers of roofing.

Hello Matt, I have only been watching your channel on You Tube for a while and I love it. I am 80 years old and have been repairing everything, the same as you are doing now also with the help of my wife when I needed her the same as Eve Helps you. The best part of this is that I can sit back and enjoy what you are doing in comfort after years of working in the rain and all of the other weather that comes. I get up at 4am everyday and the first thing I do after a big mug of tea is to watch another of your videos. I don't know how it is in the USA but over here in the UK it is a throwaway society which is sad to me. I was born near the end of WW2 and we didn't have much so fixing things was my hobby for ever. You are very skilled at what you do. Best wishes and a happy new year to you all.

I subscribed when I found out you like old metal... that auto car is like one I drove in the sixties and hauled logs for my dad. I drove until it was done and no excuses as my dad was six foot seven inches and didn't have time for excuses. He adopted me when I was eight going towards nine and there was no school where I came from. I was born in forty seven and my mom was native so I couldn't go to a white school. She died of TB when I was seven and a half. Native kids were not well thought of and so I learned about prejudice before I knew it had a name. Even My real dad didn't want me and if I was going to stay, I had to work and work I did from can't see till long after can't see again... seven days a week... I got my emancipation when I was over fifteen a bit. The sheriff's department got it for me and I never had to ask. They also gave me a drivers licence even though I wasn't quite sixteen and I couldn't read it but I knew it was important. I have tons of stories about when I was growing up.

Great idea, great engineering and prep to get both boxes and the bottom pieces in the right place. Looks good at this point for sure. One suggestion, when your camera was on the end of the building you had your trailer on loaded with trusses, there is a tree that's leaning. It looks like, from the camera angle, that if it fell it would hit that roof and destroy a very good roof. Good job.

I absolutely love your building project, with two shipping containers! WOW! I also see, your location, in the woods, behind a farm. Tell us how you did that, without being hassled by the town, with zoning , and permits, and bureaucracy ! Do you own the land? or do you have a long term lease? So they do not control your life? How old are you? You must have one very good paying trade? Because you are spending a lot of money! Have you been planning all this, for years? You are living, what I wanted to do for years! In my case, I had a good friend, allow me to do my old truck hobby, on his farm. But watching you is a thrill! really! God bless You! Are you a welder by trade? Are you a bull dozer mechanic? Tell Us about your self, and your qualifications? By the way, get an old shop manual for your, autocar. They are worth, the trouble, for information. Also, when the time comes, down the road , do videos on , say, breaking loose old engines, how you do it? and tell the guys , always , how to stay safe! Maybe , you can do a video, on building , a very safe, wood burning furnace to heat your garage, and how you intend to insulate it, if you want to work in it during the winter! Your bobcat is a really neat machine, but respectfully, they are not cheap! even used! A good project, perhaps would be getting an old 1964 Massey Ferguson 2500 tractor rough terrain fork lift, rebuilding or repairing its engine and tranny, which is a pedal control shuttle back and forth, model, and build a platform of sorts , to work on it, at high levels. The one I have goes over twenty feet high, a three mast section lift! Cheap, old, and a wonder to have around for Lifting, pulling engines , and doing work! They are obsolete, but great work horses, and parts readily available from many sources!! You are like a breath of fresh air! Look at this youngster going at it! Bravo! keep up the good work ! kennethzakaib607@gmail.com

kenneth zakaib thanks for the praises, (not too sure I deserve them tho) I’m just a guy trying to get by, the farm was my grandmothers originally and I bought half. I’m 27 and work as an operator on large construction projects but I’ve worked many other jobs that have given me the skills I have, been a laborer, mechanic, carpenter, machinist, went to school to be a welder and learned everything else on my own. My equipment has all been bought and paid for by doing side jobs when I’m not working for large contractors and the old iron is all just my hobby. As for zoning I live by a don’t ask don’t tell policy lol in the long run this building is basically just and equipment and storage shed so I don’t plan on insulating it heating it. Once I build my big shop I’ll be doing all the other stuff you mentioned which I’ll cover and then some when the time comes! It all takes time and I keep pretty busy so thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy!

DEAR SIR, super thanks for your reply! I can't believe it ! you actually got me talking to some one over the internet! I am an older guy, who did not grow up with these computers. Well, I think you are great! I did much the same, bit by bit, tools, forklifts, compressors , weldors, I have a couple of older tow trucks, but like I said , I was lucky enough, to befriend, a fine well to do family, who allowed me to do my hobby on their private property. I even have a 1600 4x4 international loadstar, built for the USA air force, that spent its life on the DEW line, and worked on the base on Broughton island, site FX-5. a piece of cold war history! 1963 with air over hydraulic brakes, to pull air brake trailers! Any way, please be carefull , young man! If some one gets jealous, or a new mayor comes into town, and these by law inspectors show up, at your property, it can get real ugly, very fast! If you are a registered farmer, agricultural laws are more lienient! I advise you to cover your butt with permits. A storage shed , still needs a permit! And permits, require adherance to building codes! And I deeply apologise if I am getting on your nerves! That is the farthest thing , on my mind! CYA young man! As I watched I initially thought your trusses were going to extend over each container and then disappointed you chose to only cover the middle area. After reading several comments I understand why you didn't go that way. If I were to build something similar I could live in I would certainly use your truss system to cover two, three or more containers. Solar panels would be an easy addition as well. Your truss system installation is ingenious and I thank you for sharing the process. You have a new subscriber. Happy New Year!

Solar panels do not need to be angled as within 17degrees of the equator but removing surface water puddles and leaves are problematic.:-)

Nice size of building interior i.e. floor area. Hopefully, you can get rid of most , if not all, of that muddy floor. When I put up my 30' x 40' building I was very lucky to have had about 8 buddies, a crane, and a couple of tractor/loaders to help and we got it all together over a long weekend to get that up and closed in. These steel/galvanized buildings are really good aren't they!

Thanks for the video. I am in North Phoenix Arizona and I am building a container building exactly like yours. However I’m going to run the trusses all the way over my containers because I need the shade in the summertime. That damn container will reach about 140° in the summer.

Nice design & build. I like your content the camera, battery and post production will get better with time. Enclose both ends you'll never regret it. Use two doors on the front with barn trolleys you could easily fabricate. Also add a couple I-Beams spanning containers for beam hoists. Pour an outdoor concrete pad for a generator and your gas welder and put them on sliding skids for quick removal for travel jobs and build insulated walls and roof for them.

All things I’ve thought of, but ultimately this building will become a storage shed long term I want to build a large shop adjacent to this one with heated concrete floors higher ceilings. The works!
