This year’s Valley gala was not without its mishaps by a long shot however when everything went to plan, the timetable was a glorious one. More locals, more goods train shunting, loco swaps, double headers, the lot. The single greatest achievement of the gala was the reopening of Eardington station for passenger use after 41 years of neglect. The team there handling the barrier crossing, the train lengths and the sales of cake were first rate which is why I chose to start and finish my day (Friday) at the station. I hopped up to Highley, Arley, Bewdley and Kidderminster then back to Arley, Hampton Loade and finally Eardington.
Luckily, Friday seems now to have been the best day to have gone because the timings were all kept to a sensible minimum delay, the sun was shining and it all went very well. That was until Vulcan caused a fire at Trimply and Omaha failed on Sunday but we’ll gloss over that.
Fortunately, I managed to see every loco on the Friday with some performing interesting movements like Vulcan on the goods train or 7714 on the GW set. A thoroughly enjoyable event which could have gone better. Roll on the winter gala when we should have 7812 and 2968 running again.
