FYI, the lines on a 3X5 card are exactly 1/4” apart. I carry extra cards for students. Put your needle in a line, line up with edge of foot , lower foot and check the setting.

My late auntie was a tailor, as were her parents, and one thing my mom & I picked up from them is that they were very selective about what measuring tools they introduced to their workspace and each single one of them needed to be tested for consistency with the others. They had one 'benchmark' measuring tape for reference. It has not occurred to me to test my sewing machine plate. Thank you for this video. All the best!

There's a needle gauge that has holes in it to set the perfect seam you need for a project from 1/8" to 1.5". One is called "Ideal needle gauge", and even has a scant 1/4", the other is by Dritz and I'm sure there is more. There's a hole in the template plastic that you can put your unthreaded needle into and then mark the edge however you prefer. Makes lining up the proper edge super simple. I lay about 6-7 layers of painters tape cut off a 1" roll. When it doesn't stick great anymore I just score the corner with a pin, remove the bottom piece of tape and it's brand new again. When I'm not using it, I stick it to my machine someplace. Never leaves a residue and is always handy. I've even used a fine marker so I know where to put the painters tape or to use without the painters tape, depending on the job. The marker comes off with rubbing alcohol. Works for me

I wish I could use any kind of tape or guide on my quarter inch seam allowance that I don’t have to move. My problem is that on my machine. The bobbin is a drop in bobbin. If I have everything lined up and then I run out of bobbin thread, I have to remove all of the guides that I had, and start all over again after I change the bobbin thread.
@sugarstitchesquiltco
Жыл бұрын
Oh that stinks! I’ve seen some break the tape where the bobbin case opens so essentially you don’t have 1 long piece of tape but a small strip on top by the plate and then a separate piece after the gap where the case opens. Does this make sense? 😜

I too have a Juki Tl. The 7mm is accurate but the conversion to 1/4” is not which sadly makes the needle plate less than useful to those of us working in inches.
@sugarstitchesquiltco

I rarely reference the sewing plate alone. I love the magnetic guide and I make sure to set that and not worry about where it technically is on the plate. Same with the Juki foot, it’s close but I rely on that guide more than anything! Good luck to you!!

Great video! One thing I consider when I'm learning something is that when someone shows me the correct way - that's super great. However, I would like to see how you determine the wrong way and what you do about it. You could probably very easily (purposely) sew the seam incorrectly without anyone noticing. Then you would show us what the incorrect result looks like, the cause and how you fix it. Perfection is great but it is imperfection that I can sometimes learn best from. Thanks!

Something I don't see a lot of people mention is for sewing machines that can do zig-zag stitching. The needle can move from left to right. Does it always center itself when you change back to a straight stitch? I'm wondering if I need to remeasure every time I switch from straight to zig-zag and back again? -Sally from MO
