In this video, join me as I attempt to bring Feyre's Starfall gown, from Sarah J. Maas's ACOTAR series, to life. I share the process of crafting this intricate dress, from selecting fabrics reminiscent of the nighttime sky to the challenges of dying mesh and pearls for the perfect Starlight Energy. Check out my self-drafted pattern decisions, a last-minute fabric store trip, and a touch of crisis management. Despite some rushed moments and glittery mishaps, I reflect on the overall growth in my sewing skills, expressing both pride and disappointment in the final outcome. Hey, is me Hannah. Don't mind me. I'm just updating my countdown until the release of House of Flame in Shadow, the third book in the Crescent City series from Sarah J. Maas. You might have gathered from some of my previous videos that I do identify as a SJM fan, a “Maasochist,” a “Maasassin,” if you will, and like many SJM fans, I got my start through ACOTAR, or the Court of Thorns and Roses series. So to pay homage and honestly, just keep me distracted while I wait for this new edition to the Maasiverse I am going to make Feyre’s Starfall gown. Crafted of tiny blue gems so pale they were almost whites, it clung to every curve and hollow before draping to the floor and pooling like liquid starlight. The long sleeves were tight, capped at the wrists with cuffs of pure diamond. The neckline grazed my collarbones, the modesty of it undone by how the gown hugged areas I suppose a female might enjoy showing off. My hair had been swept off my face with two combs of silver and diamond, then left to drape down my back. And I thought as I stood alone in my bedroom that I might have looked like a fallen star. Obviously there's some room here for interpretation. But I always picture Feyre in dark colored apparel, so I picture her in a dark colored dress. So I'm going to make a dark blue dress and cover it in light colored gemstones. I've ordered some white colored mesh with a sort of gradation of pearls on it, which I will use to address the light colored gems. Ideally, yes. I would be using tiny blue gems so pale, they're almost white. But I have like a week to make this video for you, so I can't be spending all my time hand sewing rhinestones and beads onto a full-length dress. Pearls will do. I'm using this really pretty dark blue satin for the dress. It just reminds me so much of the nighttime sky. I think it's just the perfect color. Obviously, we're going to overlay this with a mesh with pearls on it. So I'm hoping that that will bring the Starlight Energy. As for a pattern, I just self-drafted on my dress form back there and went with a princess seam. I'm kind of waiting to see exactly how much fabric I have after doing the bodice and kind of over the hips and then the sleeves, and then, yeah, we'll see how much fabric I have left and make a skirt out of it and see what I can get out of that. So, yeah, kind of winging it like an Illyrian. I'll see myself out. Rather than buy or find a free sleeve pattern online, I stumbled across a tutorial from Thoughtful Creativity on how to draft my own. So I followed along, only making a few adjustments, mainly to tighten the sleeve, without making them so tight I couldn't get my hands through. And I'm quite pleased with how they turned out. Definitely recommend. Okay, so slight crisis. This is not enough fabric. I didn't order enough fabric. It's so pretty, though. This is the layer that's meant to go on top of the mesh with the pearl detail. I'll show it to you so you can envision what my vision was. Come in. Soup. Thanks. Okay. Slightly less of a crisis now. [Love you.] Love you. Soup delivery. Maybe everything will be okay. Anyway, so you can kind of see the gradation of the pearls from the waist or so, it would be fewer pearls. And then down to the bottom where the pearls increase. That's where it would pool like starlight. And then around the neckline to kind of just be flipped and kind of go to the waist with a higher density of pearls and down to the waist with fewer pearls. Alas. I have two days before I want this done, so I can't order more fabric. So I guess we're taking a trip to the fabric store. Before I did anything else, I used some synthetic Rit dye to test this fabric and see if I could dye the mesh blue, for starters, but also to see if I could get the ...
