I like the way Bowzer stares straight into the camera when he is singing ;) Donny sounds really great here.

Nice to see this posted. As to the "live or Memorex" question above, the fact is that we sang our lead vocals live on camera (as did our guest stars usually), but we normally pre-recorded our background vocals and instrumentals. This number was a rare example of something we learned for the TV show BEFORE we'd done it in our live appearances. Even more unusual, we imported this song (never a real hit single originally, just a fun showcase number) into our concert appearances for years to come.

donnieork I have loved this song since the original version. It was a little pitchy in some parts, but you all did a nice job like always. I loved your show.

@@Tomes23 I'm known to be hard to please about pitch intonation, so your comment "a little pitchy" catches my notice. For such a heavy background vocal piece, this isn't all that far from okay! (-8 But, just for me, will you cite the playback counter numbers where we're "pitchy" to your ears?

Love this song/video as it shows Bowzer singing very well along with the under-appreciated voice of Donny. The fun they had singing this music was always apparent. While they were formed as a "parody" group, and always had fun with the music, they always sang and played this music with a lot of respect. Sadly in this day and age we don't have a show on TV that's really funny and goofy. I wish there was a 2010 version of Sha Na Na.

I do profess that's my voice on the highest harmony backgrounding this performance. It's before Dirty Dan got fired and during our second cycles of hissy fits, circa the 1978 production year. Who was or wasn't in the background singers' pre-recording sessions varied, except for invariably including me and Jon.

Why was he fired?
@donnyyork2149
Жыл бұрын
@@gregmurphy2020, a sweet enough guy, but socially awkward, Danny got into too much cocaine usage and failed to show up for television work days a time or two. The TV show producers fired him and used a studio guitarist in our pre-recording sessions. That player, Glen Jordan, an old Boston-orbit friend of some of us, became one of us on stage the next few road tours. We didn't "go to bat" for Danny to stay in the group, because he'd been too often an embarrassment over the preceding year or so. Later, he "cleaned up" and became a humble practitioner of Christian faith, last visiting us backstage in suburban L.A. circa 2005. He died unexpectedly of cardiovascular malfunctioning circa 2007. 💗

@@donnyyork2149, thank you so much for this answer! Good to hear that Dan did end up in a good way of living before he got sick. He was talented and I am glad that he became a christian man in the end ✝️

After looking at some of the Sha Na Na clips, it looks as if only the soloists sung live while the playing and the backup were pre-recorded. The only time when the playing and singing were live were when there were guests stars on the show.

Not even then, as a rule. Mic setting for what we performed in the TV studio would have been the thing to soak up the hours, so pre-recording in studio was never open to dispute at all. The lead singer(s) almost invariably recorded their sound live while the cameras were shooting, via hand held AND/OR lapel clip-on microphones. That said, my 2nd verse here left me feeling I'd nailed it okay! (If I hadn't, I'd have to live with it. This show was taped with people in suits watching the clock!)

The Move ('60s British pop band) also has a nice version of this song with drummer Bev Bevan singing the bass voice part. The Move is the group that later evolved into the Electric Light Orchestra after some personnel changes. The Move was a great group though not well-known in the USA.

I believe Bowser's voice was LOWER than Bill Medley's which means Medley had a bit more range. However, without a bass voice like Bowser's you couldn't do doo wop like Sha na na did it.

My tattoo "Marie" is something I've never actually made permanent via real tattoo artistry. I'm right-handed but, as a dressing room routine, I've always written the name "Marie" with my free left hand using a Magic Marker or equivalent for every appearance we've done. "Marie" is my nearly-ten-years older sister's name, which I choose for its 1950s urban character and in recognition of her bringing home rock & roll phonograph records enough to have made me the hippest of elementary-age school kids back then.
