I have watched three or four character creation guides for SR5e and I was still lost because they speak from a point of view of their own knowledge on what was already known to them. Yours was the first that it all made sense, especially the priority table. Thank you sir.

I've been playing since 2nd edition and I have learned a lot. Where I once had action movie themed run and gun missions, I now have intrigue, mysteries and problem solving situations. My games once focused on creating a body count, now they focus on trying to avoid conflict as the characters survival based off them keeping their cool and not shooting to kill. Going berserk or losing your cool and you are sure to meet your end. The biggest problem I have had in recent years is the players. They don't want to learn the rules or the basics of their character. They don't want to take notes and they would like me to constantly remind them of the mission they are on and why its important. This happens even with seasoned gamers. Most gamers just dungeon crawl or hack and slash. It is so difficult to find players that would like to explore a mystery or put pieces of a puzzle together and explore their characters place in this world. Shadowrun and the 5th world is the greatest game I have ever experienced (2nd is Warhammer 40k) and I have such shit luck getting enough people to play for longer than 4 sittings. Anyone else with this problem?

So, I have over 20 years of theater experience. I have over 30 years of writing experience (including sketch and long-form fiction), and a decent amount of improv practice thrown in. Seems like a no-brainer to DM my own campaign. Never found a game worth playing, until back in July when I discovered Shadowrun. I since have played every video game in the series (minus the xbox one.) I've gotten my hands on almost every source/campaign book for the first two editions, and the first three Charrette novels. FYI, the first thing i read was Neuromancer by William Gibson, because I gotta start at the beginning. It's now January, and obviously this is NOT the best time for sitting in close proximity of half a dozen people for extended periods... So, I'm working on a Shadowrun campaign for two people. Basically, my girlfriend's character (Ex Wage Mage) is the only one not being controlled and portrayed by me. Not counting the clusterf**k that are the basic rules, I'm well aware of how much work I'm giving myself. (Which is why it's been about 7 months, and I'm still just reading source books.) Considering I've never really played a TTRPG in my life, it's even MORE work. Before you ask, I'm modding the crap out of the rules because I hate math. It's the same test rolls, but I'm employing some rules from the videogame for speed and simplification. I'm NOT re-rolling or counting down initiative. Eff that. Roll once at the top, and that's the order for the battle. Everyone gets two actions per turn, to start. Playing 5 out of 6 characters on the team, plus NPCs will give me plenty of practice. The first couple missions and possible campaign are just going to be practice for both of us, until we can hopefully get more players and start to add some of the rules back in. If anyone has ANY tips (even obvious ones) for a primed-and-ready noob, please tell me. (Sticking with 1st and 2nd editions for now, because I'm most familiar with the storyline and time period.)

@@AaronderSchaedel Sweet! I'll look into it. Haven't committed anything to paper yet. Still a long way to go. I'm browsing reddit and comparing rules from different editions when I'm able. Obviously, the more I read, the more the rules start to make sense. I'm just impatient and want to start world-building. But, I'll learn everything before I really commit to heavy modding. Thanks!

@@guyvizard549 Fast Food Fight, the free 5e one shot mission with sample characters might help you dip your toes in the universe in action, without much math. I played with my group (I also had 0 experience GM running) it is only 23 pages for rules. If you like it, it’s also a nice primer into the real rules (500 pages). From personal experience, it took me 1 months of daily reading to get to page 251 where magic rules end at around 368 and then GM sections and world building continues until page 500. I’m still reading, It honestly feels like a textbook sometimes but it’s fun to imagine and play out and it might help to bait player interest into fueling your own motivation to read it all. The alternative is house rule it and revisit rule book afterwards.

One suggestion is to play Shadowrun Anarchy instead; though that's the "Rules Lite" edition of the game. If you're insistent on playing 5e, my suggestion is the keep things as simple as you can: don't worry about every little intricacy of The Matrix and the Astral Realm. And regarding equipment, use the KITs from Run Faster to speed up buying starting equipment. (That part honestly takes the longest in character creation.) Just remember the core rule of Shadowrun is that dice rolls are [Stat]+[Skill] with some kind of Limit on how many hits you can get on a given roll. A lot of the specific details can probably be skipped over if they bog things down too much. (This is at least what I'd do if I tried to play Shadowrun 5e again.)

Excellent guide I bought the book recently and was trying to figure out how creating a character works, but one thing that I haven't seen mentioned anywhere is how cyberlimbs affect the stats. I tought they simpy added 3 or 4 to A or S but Chummer5e just bumps them by 2, and never above the racial limit, so that got me confused.
@AaronderSchaedel

Cyberware is one of those things where, much like any other piece of equipment, you need to read each individual pieces writeup to get how it works; there's unfortunately no shortcuts for understanding this one. Regarding limbs, though: their details start on page 455. Each cyberlimb has a particular STR and AGI associated with it, and if you're doing a test that requires that particular limb, you use that rating instead of your natural rating for it. By default, Cyberlimbs have a STR and AGI rating of 3, but this can be raised up to your natural STR and AGI fairly cheaply (See "Customization" on page 456, and the chart on 457) A cyberlimb can go BEYOND your natural attributes, but this uses up "capacity" that it has, and is somewhat costlier. (Capacity is explained on page 417)

here in middle europe, (germany, austria, and i donno about switzerland), the dark eye is (for whatever reason) the most popular pen and paper (or tabletop as americans call it), followed by, who'd have thought, shadowrun in second place, and vampire the maskerade as third. dnd is probably not even in the top 5, because savage worlds and fate have the advantage of their simplicity, and since cd project red made a hype about it, cyberpunk rulebooks sold pretty good lately. btw, when i speak about shadowrun, i mean 5e. the 6th is hated mostly.

Question - For an extended test, I know that you lose one die each time you continue to say fix a vehicle. What happens if you run out of dice before you are completely done? Can you come back later and try finishing it or can someone else pick up where you left off etc?
@AaronderSchaedel
6 жыл бұрын
Good question! I looked in the rulebook for it, and I couldn't find any explicit answers, but I do believe I've found something we can work with! The core rulebook states that when the amount of dice a character has for an extended test hits 0, the test is over, ending in failure. There's a section on page 54 called "Trying Again." It says if an action fails, it can be tried again, but at a -2 penalty for each retry. Though if a character waits long enough between tries (GM discretion) they can try without penalty. While this seems to be describing single roll actions, I think we can apply this same logic to Extended Tests -- one could try to pick it up again later after taking some time away from it, or somebody else could try to take a shot at it themselves a little bit sooner. In either case, I'd make anybody trying to retry a failed Extended Action have to start from 0 successes, but give them their normal dicepool to start.

I find chargen availibility cap @ 12 to be a bit limiting especially for cyberware --- anyone house rule a higher availability cap especially for cyberware/bioware?
@crapstirrer
5 жыл бұрын
12 is plenty for chargen. You're not supposed to have state of the art equipment yet. If you still want more, take a look at the Prime Runner rule in the core book and ask your GM about playing a high powered run. I forgot there was a Quality called Restricted Gear. It costs 10 karma and allows you to purchase one item of availability 18. If you get this quality during chargen you can purchase an availability 24 item instead. You can get this quality up to three times. It's from the Run Faster rulebook.

@AaronderSchaedel

It can -- but the bonuses from bioware can't go higher than +4. So for example, as a human, you can naturally raise your strength to 6, and also acquire bioware enhancements that raise it a further 4 for a max of 10, but that's as high as you can possibly go.
