16:05 this is a fair grievance but I feel like it can be easily resolved at the GM's discretion. Even with only 4, the concept is already there, there is plenty of wiggle room to have other checks be attribute only.
@AaronderSchaedel

You're right, it can. That's the strength of Tabletop games; unusual situations can be resolved on the fly. And I believe a more robust and diverse list can help less experienced GMs get a picture of how to do that. One example that could help round out the list would be something like (Body + Strength) for tearing something apart with brute force. (And an edge or two for the roll if they have appropriate equipment.)

A little weird, now that you mention it. The only counterpoint I can offer is some things I read out of the Mage splatbook, Street Wyrd. It seems to suggest that a lot of the wealthier mages tend to be respectable corporate citizens who wouldn't sully their name with criminal mercenary operations, or moneyed people slumming it for the sake of their magical tradition. Player characters in Shadowrun? They're people who've wound up turning to crime as a way to make ends meet. And if you happen to be good at throwing fireballs around... ...no, no. You have a point. This still doesn't make sense.

Regarding D&D: AD&D 2e had the gritty immersion, the most elegant class system, most intriguing party (im)balance and so many cools things. I quite like the proficiency system for instance. Character creation is wondrously simple as well. It requires a few house rules and a new weapon list however. 3.x has a lot of great ideas, prestige classes are conceptually brilliant, magic is amazing, skills are streamlined (but math heavy), and can be really good. Instead of updating things they expanded, far too many feats and classes that are conceptually identical. Fighter was nerfed to the ground as well, and the game far too focused on combat. 5e's backgrounds are wonderful, I love the skill system (SW Saga style), finally decent weapon and armour lists, and combat is decentrialized. Vancian magic has been tragically broken, the wizard is indistinct from the sorcerer. The lack of spell slots, concentration limit, lack of metamagic, and limited spell lists took the fun out of playing a mage. And the classes are going the 3.x route unfortunately, too cluttered, far too cluttered. The best D&D experiences I have had were with Baldur's Gate's updated 2e AD&D, and with early Pathfinder 1e, where we had four books in total for character creation.

AD&D 2e had a lot of neat stuff that, for one reason or another, got atrophied out of the system. Though, for a more modern take on AD&D 2e, Dungeon Crawl Classics is what I'd point somebody to. It gets the idea that each class is a different play experience down *just right*. The only thing I haven't seen a good, modern replacement for is the base building that happened in AD&D 2e. But hopefully, the Meikyuu Kingdom/Labyrinth Kingdom release won't be botched; because I *loved" that game.

From what I've seen about BESM 4e, it's very similar to 3rd, though with a few mathematical tweaks. You only get one aspect of your character at Priority A. So if you choose A for Stats, you're left with B, C, D, and E for the remaining parts of your character. (There's an alternative rule called Sum To 10 where you're allowed multiple A's, but you typically wind up needing to take more E's to compensate.)

Question: How does Shadowrun Sixth World handle the Matrix and hacking? Asking because this was the main dealbreaker for my friend who's a GM for Shadowrun 4th, but refused to even touch 5th as he felt it was a huge step backward by all but eliminating the Matrix and AR Space and bringing back the obsolete concept of the Decker, making hacking needlessly complicated by requiring bulky, cumbersome equipment to function, among other reasons. Having played his campaign and living through the rise of the internet, I'm inclined to agree that the decker is a relic best left in the 80's.

The short version is that the technology for Decking has gotten smaller, and they cut out a lot of the numbers and steps needed. That said, it's still somewhat different from 5e. From a setting standpoint, decking remains mostly the same from 5e. You still have Grid Overwatch Division, so remote hacking can still be dangerous. (And, since the Matrix mirrors our own Internet, the easiest way to prevent hackers from the internet to getting to your sensitive files is to simple not have the computer connected to the internet.) Additionally, cyberdecks have been physically shrunk down to the size of something you can wear on the back of your hand like a guantlet. (Or wrist mounted RFID scanner.) Mechanically, stuff like checking the Matrix for public information, like the weather (you don't need to do this in Seattle) or the Urban Brawl scores, you just do it. No roll needed. Though any kind of hacking follows a similar flow to combat. Build your dicepool, distribute edge, roll dice, determine effect. Hacking has it's own special list of Edge Actions. Noise is also still a factor, so being physically close to the target can still be a boon, and you don't have to lug around a behemoth of a machine to do so anymore. There's also a little bit of streamlining, since Overwatch Score is still a thing, but they merged OS increase into the defender's roll if you do something illegal on the Matrix. In general, it seems easier to track and closer to what Shadowrun Anarchy does by simplifying things a little bit, but keeps with the 6e theme of giving out more Edge.

6th Ed is the worst version of SR so far for a number of reasons, among them is that the game claims to be less complex and in it's own way it is but then they threw in having to track Edge for every little thing on top of having to compare stats to do it plus the game is riddled with errors and omissions, armor no longer actually protects you, melee weapons don't do any more damage if wielded by a weak human or a huge troll etc and the list just goes on. Personally I'll just wait for 7th edition or play 2nd or 3rd ed.

Is it just me, or is there needless amounts of dice rolling? Roll to both hit and dodge, to both do damage and to soak it, and even more? It feels like combat would take forever with all the dice the GM would need to keep track of and roll. Through D&D 2e, 3.x, 5e, Exalted 2e, Star Wars Saga, Dark Heresy and various Swedish RPGs I have never seen anything like it. I have even tried a game where GM never rolls a single die. Wait wait wait.... this sounds a lot like FFG's Star Wars games, extremely so even. Not a terrible game, just a very strange one.
@AaronderSchaedel
6 ай бұрын
The dice rolling is definitely excessive, IMO. Every roll required is another set of steps for determining a result. (And, if speed is what you're hoping for in a game, you want the player to have to go through as few steps as possible.) Two games that get it right are Degenesis (a German, Post Apocalypse game) and Fabula Ultima (an Italian, homage to the Final Fantasy video games) Degenesis lumps as much information into one dice pool as possible by having you count 4, 5, and 6; as well as how many 6s. Depending on the situation you're rolling for, the 4/5/6 and the 6 mean different things. (For determining turn order in Combat, 4/5/6 determines who goes first, while every two 6s gives you an extra action.) Fabula Ultima, meanwhile, has every dice roll consist of two dice, with the total and the higher of the two being what you keep track of. And as an example of how it'd be used: the total would determine if you manage to hit in combat, while the higher of the two dice would be added to your damage total.
