An old classic. In Cambodia, we had a modified version of Luc Lac. We put a fried egg on top of the rice. It takes the dish into another dimension. :)

@cHemon, @Heleninzki: But *the tone variations in Vietnamese and Thai* are still *different between each other* ; it's like *overlapping two separate musical scales* and saying : "oh, all musicians must be good at all music!" *Thai and Vietnamese speakers would never mistake each others' languages* , yet *Cantonese has elements that sound like both.*

Pickled red onion is one of those super simple things you can have on hand to brighten anything. I just made a quick little single serve coke slaw for my husbands BBQ pulled pork sandwich and remembered I also had pickled red onions. Both those things really elevate a fatty sandwich filling like pulled pork.

OMG ... I have been following you like forever but didn't know you can pronounce Vietnamese very well ... actually better than me lol. Thank you so much for sharing the world Vietnamese Shaken Beef! Bò Lúc Lắc is our family favorite because it touches our soul, is simple to make, and is super yummy to eat. We normally eat our shaken beef with steamed rice and cucumber tomato lettuce (or tomato water crest) with honey vinaigrette so our shaken beef usually loaded with sauce. When I was living in California, I only used Rib Eyes or Filet Mignon. But now I live in the Midwest of Wisconsin, even the Flat Iron Steak will taste out of this world for this dish. Shaken Beef is a French influence dish so we like to marinate it with minced shallots, minced garlic, and crackled black pepper. There is no need for the black soy sauce either because on the hot wok, the beef will be seared with beautiful color. As for us, we don't put one by one cube in, we just add that whole bowl (since your portion is not that much) into the hot wok along with oil and butter and start stirring like mad ;-) for a few minutes then follow that with shaken the wok.

Hi Pai! Thanks for another great recipe! Your pronunciation is really good by the way. For the marinade, my mom taught me to add a little bit of "húng lìu", a flavoring powder (a mix of chinese cinnamon, sweet basil seeds, star anise, cloves, amomum tsao-ko, and some other spices), which is not easily found in other countries and can be substituted by Five Spice powder. It makes the dish very distinctive just by the smell :)

"Bò (beef) lúc lắc (shaking)" hahaha P'Pai said really Vietnamese tone, surprised! The other recipe comes with a lot of onion, bell pepper (yellow, red and green) cut into cubes is also very popular in Saigon. P'Pai, why should we have marinated with oyster sauce? Love the way you cook
@sariel8927

@gialuanthang7716

Yup the most popular or probably all the bò lúc lắc in Saigon has onion, bell pepper and fries. In fact I think that is the best combo to eat with this beef tbh. Just beef, veggies, and fries. That's a perfect Saturday night for me. And the marinate has oyster sauce in it because oyster sauce gives much more depth and complexity. Since most of Western refrain from using MSG (originally the Vietnamese recipe adds in teaspoons of MSG and what we would call "gia vị", I still don't know exactly what it is but we still use it a lot lol), adding oyster sauce brings out the sweetness in veggies and beef, also it colors the beef when cooked. And yeah, oyster sauce is good with any kind of stir fry, obviously.

Just found out about this recipe. So similar to Filipino the recipe for beef salpicao. Instead of fish sauce, we use Worcestershire sauce though. I think same purpose, because Worcestershire sauce (which comes from fermented anchovies) provides the Umami component. Please check it out and maybe even make a video of it!

Hi Pailin Do you have any dishes cook with pickle garlic. I went to a Thai restaurant in Toronto and my friend ordered a stirred fry dish with pork and pickle garlic. I had a bite and it was delish but do not know the name of the dish. It was really good, the pickle garlic has a very nice flavour and it was very different as well.
