@arthas640
6 жыл бұрын
i know its dumb, but i always judge people who crack their egg into a ramekin first. Maybe its because i grew up on a small farm with a ton of chickens, but i've been able to crack an egg without breaking the yolk or getting shell in the egg since i was about 10. The ramekin trick was something i did as a little kid. I break the yolk or get shell in there maybe less than 1/20 times.

I used a blend of this recipe and America's Test Kitchen Teen Cookbook's version, whereas I added a teaspoon of ground coriander and two minced garlic cloves with the spices, chopped up roasted red peppers (in place of red peppers), and garnished everything with parsley, cilantro, and cheddar cheese (didn't have feta). I also sauteed the onions and mushrooms with chilli crisp as well in the olive oil! Absolutely delectable dish and perfect commentary to put anyone in a cheery mood. Thank you, Chef John!

I actually made this a couple days ago for my family and I and it turned out awesome. The mushrooms were a great addition and added some savory juicy flavor to the whole dish so I'd recommend anyone to add mushrooms as well. I also added a cubed gold Yukon potato in the beginning of the saute with the onions and mushrooms. They're less starchy than brown potatoes so they kept their shape and were nicely done once the whole affair was finished. They definitely add some hearty elements to this otherwise primarily acidic dish, not traditional and more of a personal preference but it was a nice addition overall. Just make sure to saute them in the very beginning with the onions and mushrooms otherwise they'll be under-cooked. I also baked slices of french loaf with garlic butter to act as our toast, not very traditional whatsoever but I couldn't argue with the results. Only thing I'd say is if you want a spicier result, keep the seeds in your jalapeno (I didn't and really wish I did) and maybe even add some chili flakes to your saute'd veggies if you're feeling frisky. Easily one of the most flavorful things I've ever made, 10/10 would make again.

What a beautiful, yet humble dinner! With some roasted crispy potatoes, you’re bound to be praised as though you whipped up a much more difficult and expensive meal. Thanks chef, this is going to be on my winter dinner rotation for sure! Happy tummies and happy wallets is my new game.

I made this after I had made Marcella Hassan’s famous tomato sauce recipe , (2nd day sauce) I added sliced olives, sautéed garlic, onion and peppers, finished with olive oil, peperocinni slices, feta cheese crumbles and cilantro! Mmmmmm it’s a keeper! Chef 😘

Nice version Chef, been making this dish all my life. The original Libyan Shakshuka uses ground Caraway.. It's much more interesting then the Cumin. Also, I'd serve it in the pan along with fresh bread to soak up the sauce.

the same in tunisia caraway is used not cummin which we use mainly in fish dishes and rarely used in other meals

G'day John, This comment is six years after the video so, you'll probably never see it, however, this is, literally, a 'world dish'. There is a version of this dish on, virtually every continent and several versions in Europe. In Spain and Mexico this dish is 'huevos rancheros', in Italy it's 'uova di ranch' etc. It seems that, somehow, this dish started 'somewhere' and eventually made its way around the world. It might have started life as an Israeli or Arabic dish called, you guessed it; Shakshuka because they are old, old languages, Shakshuka. So, there you are, where ever there were chickens, tomatoes and onions there was a version of this dish with only tiny variations, mostly in the different kinds of herbs available. Sadly, in English, 'Eggs Poached in Tomatoes' just isn't sexy enough, so we know it by several names, depending on the ethnic origins of the restaurant we're ordering them. Still, it does not detract from this perfect hot breakfast food, or big brunch dish or dinner that you would call an 'entree' that we, down here and in England would call a 'main course'. Ah, the language of food can be confusing at times. Everyone should know this internationally classic dish so thanks, Chef John, for a fantastic recipe for whatever it's called. Cheers, BH P.S. If you're in a hurry and want to do 'huevos rancheros', take a big jar of good, store-bought Mexican chunky salsa and use that, with a bit of water and your favourite spices and you'll cut down your cooking time for this dish by about half... I've found it a good idea if you suddenly want this as your hot breakfast before heading to work. :) Bill
