Thx for the tutorial! It is really helpful. However, I still don't understand the difference between scale and size... I believe that size is the property for one shape (the rect) and scale is the property for the entire group. But why changing the size from small to big and scale from big to small at the same time can create that "coming and going" effect? Don't they cancel out each other?
@ECAbrams
8 жыл бұрын
They are separate properties entirely. They can both be animating separately with different values and certainly do not "cancel" each other. the size is how big a thing is in pixels. The scale is what percentage of scale it is at. Is a layer containing a 50*50 square scaled to 50% the size similar to a 25*25 size square on a 100% scale layer. Is that the same? No. Especially when you consider things like parenting, anchor points, and effects and everything else that can be based on scale. And in this example scale is scaling up things from the anchor point while size governs the individual things completely independent of the scale of the overall group.

Hey Mr. Abrams. First off, great vids/ tutorials. Your humor and flow make your tutorials so enjoyable to watch. I actually laugh out loud, and then realize I'm watching with my headphones on and people are just looking at me like "Who's that cackling idiot?" lol Anywho, I was wonder how would I go about creating this repeater style animation, but using an imported image versus a shape layer created in AE? I brought in a PSD file I wanted to play with, but the "ADD: >" feature is of course not present and therefore the listed animations not available. I tried using the CC Kaleida Plugin, but that's not quite the look I'm going for. Thoughts? -Andy

What version of AE are you using. Around 4:47 into the video rotation in the repeater isn’t working the same for me.
@ECAbrams
Жыл бұрын
It would have been whatever version was going around in 2013. However, the functions have not changed. Most likely your rotations are not working as expected because the groupings and anchor points are not the same as the video. Hit u u to call up everything that is off baseline about a layer and see if there is any position or anchor point changes that need to be centred. Maybe that will help. Things can look the same visually, but not be structured the same.

You can, but it might not do what you intend? I'm guessing you're looking for a way to take this from everything happening at once to each copy animating one at a time. That take a bit more work to animate the repeater's properties and may not be able to accomplish everything you hope it will do.

I have a little problem with the rotation of the repeater. I made the group and I followed the hierarchy of the shape layer, but the repeating shapes are rotating without changing position. Why is it doing that?
@ECAbrams

all the repeated parts rotate relative to an anchor point. That is likely the issue. If the shapes are not far from the anchor point they will just spin in place.

Is a png the kind of file that has vector information? The answer is no. You would need to trace that png so it becomes vectors. Or just ask whoever drew the damn thing in the first place because most logos start as vectors in eps or ai format.

When I get to 5:19 in the video, all of my rectangles are on top of each other, not spread out like yours. My repeater is set to 8 copies, the transform rotation is 45º, the position is 0,0 and the scale is 100%. What could be the problem?
@ECAbrams

They are rotating around the anchor point. It's all relative. So they're rotating but not around the point you want them to.

Al Lemieux i also had this problem and i found a solution for this. What you do is that you change the anchor point of the repeater. I kept changing the anchor point of the whole shape layer which didn't work.
@ECAbrams

Josh Davis How do you fix what? If you have all the things at 0,0 and they're all rotating then they will just rotate around 0,0 and of course there will be no space. When you move the position away from the centre then the rotation starts to make a difference. Imagine you have a record spinning and you place something on the record at the centre. It looks like it's not going anywhere. Now move it to the outside of the record, it looks like it's going far. The distance from the centre will make the rotation more impactful on the distance.

Awesome tutorial! One speed bump I ran into while following was that the way the Repeater and Path Shapes are stacked matters. You will need to put the Repeater outside of the Group layer and below it for it to affect the group. Also even before that step, you will need to put the "Transform: Group" stacked below the Shape Path and Stroke that you want to affect. At least that is what made this work for me, please correct if I am wrong... (using After Effects CC 2015.3)

@ECAbrams
10 жыл бұрын
1. You can make your "own" graphics with the repeater and shape layers, they make vector shapes and if you can draw it then you made your own graphics 2. You can import a .ai and make it into a shape layer 3. Pixels do not work like vectors so importing form Ps will be much different. 4. You will have to use other effects and arrays and depending on how you intend to repeat things you may be faced with different challenges. But using things like the kaleidoscope and morrow might help.

Glad you dig what we do here. As for the rotation, which specific rotation value are you changing? With layers and repeaters and groups there are many to choose from, each possibly rotating around a different anchor point. fixed it :) for all folks that got the same problem: the ancor point properties of "Transform : Repeater 1" and "Transform" (transformation prop of the shape layer) have to be exactly the SAME. for example: ancor point of the repeater is at 0,0,200,0 ... then the ancor point of your shape layer has to be exactly the same.

This could be down to the hierarchy of shapes and properties inside the layer. Make sure you're certain about how things are, rather than how they appear. It can be very tricky to spot so I recommend hitting u u on the keyboard to see all the properties that are off baseline, and using that to help troubleshoot the situation. Often things look how we want them, but they are not how we want them.

Crazy how I always put your videos on fullscreen and then as you were kind of closing the subject I moved the cursor and I found that it has been 10min passed already. Crazy but please keep it that way !

I've got a tutorial on Repeater Grids that might help. But it can be hard to do a cascade. You may need to use many layers and sequence them on the timeline.

Valuable tutorials. One suggestion: use a better and closer mic. Could be a lav mic or a stand mic or one of the BETTER quality headset mics (many are crap). We're getting a lot of acoustic reflections from the many surfaces of your environment that puts you on the margins of intelligibility. The goal is to increase the ratio of direct sound, from your mouth, to room reflections allowing you to bring down the reflected sounds through lower overall gain. Thanks!
