The point of the Plena is to shoot at 1.8 so comparisons at 5.6 are largely irrelevant as we would expect them to be quite similar stopped down. Also, the reason the Plena is considered such an optical marvel is not due to its 'sharpness' although it is very sharp. It is more about the other optical qualities that it exhibits - namely as a result of its large rear element it displays almost no vignetting in its FF image circle (something that the 70-200 cannot say) and it has nearly perfectly circular bokeh balls all the way to the edges of the frame another quality that the 70-200 cannot match. Don't get me wrong, the 70-200 2.8 S lens from Nikon is an amazing optic, which I have, use, and love, but the Plena, which I also have, use, and love (but for different applications), is superior to the 70-200 in most optical respects. This would be expected as the Plena is a prime and the 70-200 is a zoom, but in this case the Plena exhibits qualities (as described above) that are beyond that of even its toughest competitors: lenses like the 85 1.2 S and the 50 1.2 S from Nikon - not to mention any lens from Canon or Sony etc. -PD

I agree with you 100%. I was just curious to see how it compared to the 70-200. When I shoot with the Plena it’s mostly at 1.8 or 2.0. Thanks for watching.

@@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 I appreciate your response. I think it would be prudent to mention the points I made in this video so that those watching that are not as informed as we are will not come to a false conclusion that the 70-200 somehow replaces the Plena and that one does not need a Plena if they have the 700-200. This is not the case: they have very different use cases and this should be noted to the better understanding of the mass audience. -PD

Great comparaison, thanks for this job. I do portraits and also landscape. The 70 200 is quite a heavy lens. Plena is optimized for f/1,8 but could i take the Plena also for some landscape occasions with f/8 - f/11 ?

@@fb7575 I have found it to be sharp at every aperture I have shot at including F11. I have not shot it at F16. It has an 11 blade aperture so it has nice bokeh even stoped down. Thanks for watching.

I think the main reason for buying the prime lenses is to use it at f1.8 otherwise the difference between the two at smaller apertures is not worth the purchasing as the performance of the zoom is so good

You are correct. That’s the reason I bought the Plena. I love shooting it at 1.8. Thanks for watching.

@@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 Yes … but you compare them between f2.8 and f5.6… that why I am a little frustrated here :). Not too much because the plena is for me far over my budget… and my usage. What could,be interesting would be to compare it with the 135mm afd f2 dc to see if Nikon really improved a lot it’s fast 135mm télé… which you can find now at 1/5 of the price of the plena… I know it can t be used with autofocus on Z mount just because Nikon didn t develop a,motorized adapter which is stupid/ a shame/ not friendly as you want but it’s a fact, but I am speaking here only of optic quality :). Thx in advance.

Interesting comparison. Not owning either one of these lenses and considering budgets, seems like the 70-200 is the lens to get. That said, I have a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 and a Nikon 80 F1.8 for my D850 and the one one I use the most is the 80 mm for portraits. I do not know which way I would go when I fully transition to mirrowless. Decisions, decisions!!

The 70-200 is a more versatile lens but the 135 at 1.8 is fantastic for portraits if you have the space.

I only use prime lenses, but not because of sharpness. ! I like soft images and technical perfection is not important to me. However, if we look at sharpness, I think there is a big difference between the two lenses. . and I'm not watching it on my own monitor - it's a simple, basic piece!

I don’t think there is a big difference in sharpness. But reason to shoot the Plena is for 1.8. Thanks for watching and your comments.
