a lot of games that pushed the system to the limits are usually released towards the end of said system's life. Just look at games like Final Fantasy IX, Tales of Phantasia, Kirby's Adventure, etc.

Don’t forget Batman: Return of the Joker, which like the ones you guys mentioned, I like to call “transition games” because of not only sprite and graphic detail, but also gameplay complexity and overall quality that make them almost feel like they would fit right at home on the next generation console. In this case, they feel like very early SNES games.

The Japanese version of this game has a better Area C tune than the American version. In fact, the Japanese Area C tune is the best tune this game has to offer.
@Peter_1986
7 жыл бұрын
I have played the Japanese version several times (in fact, it's the only version of this game that I have played - all my knowledge of the American version comes from KZitem videos) and the "Area C" theme in that version is the same theme as "Area F". And while I do like that theme a lot, I always felt it was a bit weird that two stages shared the same theme and all other stages had their own unique themes. It felt like they had run out of time and quickly needed an extra stage theme, and just chose something that was already finished. You can see the same phenomenon in "BattleToads" as well - that game uses the same theme for both Surf City and Terra Tubes. There is however an abandoned theme that has a bit of a stealth feel to it, and I always felt that this theme would have fit Terra Tubes quite well.

I can't believe Natsume-Atari is back! I was happy when they announced Wild Guns Reloaded for PS4. They disappeared after the SNES era and went with the pachinko and pinball machines business to avoid expensive game development that 3D was infamous for in the 90's when it actually was pretty cheap with 3D polygons. But small developers like Natsume-Atari and Sunsoft were scared of going out of business. They were half right, it didn't happened until the PS2 era. Technosoft can approve to that. Not to get confused with Natsume Inc Japan who has no connection to Power Blade, Shadow of the Ninja, Jetsons: Cogswell Caper, Shatterhand, Pocky & Rocky and Wild Guns. The original team from Shadow of the Ninja up to Wild Guns is making the sequel to Wild Guns. The original composer who did the Japanese version of Area C in Shatterhand became the main composer in the SNES era. Known for his ancient Japan tunes and when sci-fi blends with Wild West he still has that traditional Japanese sound but kinda modernize it a bit to get a mix of East and West. He did it so well in Wild Guns.

Oh hells yes! I've said it before, but I'll say it again. Iku Mizutani is a sound genius. This game is a prime example of what you get from someone who knows the true capabilities of their instrument. He dug down into the hardware and created the Natsume NES sound driver, then used it to paint audio masterpieces. It's a shame finding a list of his work is so hard, since he's apparently had his hands in things as well known as Metal Gear. Sadly, proper credits were not a high priority back then.

aaaaaaa so pumped that you chose to give this one the stereo treatment (and including the Solbrain-only tracks! Nice touch! :D ) I keep wondering how this game would have fared if it didn't come out right around the steamroller that was the first generation of SNES games. There were some other good NES titles in 1991, but unless they were crazy-awesome like Battletoads, they really stood no chance against the likes of Super Mario World, F-Zero, Castlevania IV and Actraiser. The last two particularly leave me wondering what Shatterhand could have been with a little higher budget and extra dev time - build a more free-roaming level design (maybe not a full-blown Metroidvania, but multiple paths through a level, at least,) highlight the tactical use of the buddy 'bots, as well as build on the hooks for potentially deeper game mechanics (more spots to use the 'bot thruster, more than one damn hidden punchable wall, and more than three hidden power-up stations,) and I think we could have had something really special. (being way more fun than anyone would expect from a tokusatsu-based game about a dude who jumps and punches dudes is not too shabby, though ;)
@akatwitch

Hell, just having health persist between levels like in Shadow of the Ninja (as well as keeping each level's earnings) would amplify the tactical decision of what order to attack the stages, and that coin-chasing, med-station-hunting impulse would take on a whole new dimension...
