Back then even the cartoons were real. The writers were well aware of what kind of things kids were actually growing up around, and dealing with. Even if they didn't always directly state something, they would outline specific issues through surrounding characters. But he isn't a good man. A good man doesn't take advantage of those who love him. A good man doesn't break a woman down to the point where 'You keep the money' is the nicest thing she's ever heard. "Unconditional love" is a lie and a way for abusers and lowlifes to take advantage of actual good people. The only type of unconditional love that should exist is between parent and child. It doesn't matter that he changed, he should have been better in the first place.

That's actually how people think irl. If someone is toxic or just not a good partner in a relationship them suddenly doing the smallest gesture for said partner is interpreted as a miracle and celebrated whereas if someone is good on a daily basis people take it for granted and expect more with time or even get disappointed with the smallest of things.
