I’m increasingly seeing more misleading content saying that women don’t give #HIV to men in spite of studies that prove otherwise. These claims are qualified by pointing to anecdotal (personal experience) evidence. Anecdotal evidence is not scientific. There are SO many factors that can skew the information and even create ‘confirmation bias.’
Put simply, This is when the answer you’re seeking to find gets confirmed over and over again by virtue of the fact that it’s the answer you’re looking for.
Not denying AT ALL that a lot of women acquire HIV from a man who acquired it from another man. But we don’t need to confuse the public about female transmission risk in order to acknowledge this reality. Not to mention in other parts of the world, this story is very different.
We also don’t need to be stereotyping or making homophobic, stigmatizing comments about the gay community in order to bring attention to the hurt/trauma that a lot of straight cis women are dealing with. We DO need to have those conversations!
We can do both. We can respect science, data, lgbtq communities and we can also increasingly address the needs of often overlooked and under-served groups of people living with HIV.
To top it off, this post was made at the start of pride month and even used the hashtag #happypride
We need to stop stigma and support a healing narrative!
