Great video and nice to see younger person that can layout by hand.i have been doing sheet metal for over thirty years now.this is one way to do it.to me it’s just as easy using your square and points,little more precise on the round.every one is going to plasma tables and what we do is a dying art.

Thank you for an excellent demonstration of that method. I always wondered how this was done.
I’m sure this method is fine for a rough job in 1mm aluminium. However try this on a square to round made out of 3mm steel 2m tall. Or an offset square to round. If you are a sheet metal worker you would mark it out properly and accurately by triangulation.

In 1986 the vulcan plasma cutter came out on the market, I was a old school fabricator when everything was laid out by hand,, to form the radius on a square to round, round to round, step breaking it is ugly ,, I always clamped a vice grips on the square corner and place it in the roller,, mark stop and starting points w a sharpie and rolling up,, tweaking the round is super easy by hand, unless you go 20 ga or thicker , then a wood paddle is used to form the round , a few good whacks should do it .
Im trying to go from a 6inch round stove pipe to roughly 11inch square chimney flue. The Easiest way im thinking is folding long piece of sheet metal into a V, cutting out a spot into the bottom middle and inserting it InTo the stove pipe so ash funnels back down it And riveting the sides up from the insert so its not flat on the bottom. What is the application for this piece you have crafted?

Meine Meinung

that is not an old school method.. that's cheating on an equal square to round, what if it was an off centred square to round and why not do it by triangulation , and teach apprentices to do it... not proper trades men who do this...

@@Sheet_Metal_Workshop i hope i haven't offended you, that was not my intent, my main reason for commenting was that i have seen many a short cut being done with tricky jobs and easy copied, which makes it easier for people who have not done their apprenticeship to take work off time served trades men... also i dont like the computers that are used for making templates and even a square to round... to me it takes away from our trade.... ive never used one... . i wish you well.....

Sheetmetals a dying trade man. Like my HVAC teacher said, if ya don't move with the times you get left behind. I worked in an old school sheetmetal shop and learned shit. It's useless dude. 100 percent useless. Plenums, round pipe, ductboard, bla bla bla is where HVAC went. Nobody gives a shit about trade anymore it's about that fuckin dollar. Slap it in, get 2 grand, carry yer ass to the next one. Unfortunately that's how it is. I made 17.50 hr and applied at a HVAC place and put 15. The cocksucker said "ain't that a little steep". The piece of shit slapped ductboard in and payed guys 10 an hour if he could. I almost told him "oh, that's right, you use fuckboard". It's a shame, it is, yet that's where the trade's going. To shit.
@robwebster4895

Was he a good sheet metal worker or a good Lagger? There's a huge difference between ducting airflow and wrapping pipes. Ductwork has bolted flange or slide joints, where lagging has lap joints. Plenty of laggers might use this because they don't need to worry about air leakage, but if you need to have accurate measurements or offsets this won't work out for you at all. A quality sheety would be able to triangulate an equal sq-rd just as quickly as this without having to waste time making a mock-up model. You're not going to be able to make a mock-up when your sq-rd is 3000 x 3000-2100 x 1500H, you'd be wasting 3 sheets just to make a mock pattern for the real pattern. In saying that though, to all the puritan sheeties condemning this method, when was the last time you actually had to triangulate a sq-rd in the shop? If you do it on the reg, good for you, not many people get to exercise the skills of the trade anymore. Most modern sheeties run for help when they have to calculate the cut sizes, let alone actually marking out fittings.
