I still have mine circa 1986. My PB largemouth was caught with that reel and I still use it with a 5.5 ft pistol grip Fenwick Eagle. Combo still catches fish.

My first baitcaster. I got two of them when I was 14 and joined BASS as a noboater using them. Never getting rid of them as they are a part of me. Thanks for posting.

The switch on the top isn't flipping switch... It's a back reel switch...

After the review I really don't know anything about the features of the reel. All I know is how great they were and when they were popular. A little info on all of the different features would have been nice.

Does anyone ever run across the late 80s version of that reel 1988 that has the thumb bar spool release with the flipping switch instead of the side latch spool release? I found 2or 3 if them on eBay,1 new in the box for$30 and ain't seen one since of these models since.every time I see the fighting star drag models I envision Roland martin dramatising them on TV. You can still see that Roland martin reel on KZitem type in Roland martin spinnerbait and you'll see a video from 1988 with this reel with him wearing a silver Shimano jacket

I been practicing with a shimano B-mag 1001. I hear a lot about ratio on bait casters but I can't fine it on this on. I can't fine any information for that matter. What can you tell me about it?

I had one back then - they are like a Hot Blonde. Pretty as Hell but not worth a shit at anything else. Looks good crap function. I had a Ambassador 4600C that was 10 times the reel.

Is the 4600c the blue colored ambassador reel? I got one of them last year I had the late 80s Shimano bantam without the retarded fighting star drags and they were just as good as the abus people bought them 36years ago and are still using them and expect to be using them 36yeats from now.flipping switches were mandatory issue in all reels by 1988 now you can only get them in a Lews super duty or qauntum or accurist diawa and Abu also standardized the flipping switch in the late 80s but Shimano was the leader with them now you can't get a Shimano that even has a flipping switch I agree with you in this model of reel he said Kmart and it even looks cheap and this is the reel specifically that Roland martin used in tv 30years ago but without the flipping switch and he's the most famous fisherman especially on TV that does a lot of flipping and he's didn't have this reel model with the flipping switch and he's never used the flipping switch and Nealy all he does is flip and you can look his 89s show up in KZitem where he's wearing his silver Shimano jacket and using this reel and having to demonstrate the stupid fighting star drags and acts as if it's annoying him and he was forced to do it in tv.this reel LOOKS LIKE cheap crap where the other model if bantams lasted as long as the ambassadors .in 1988 the regular Shimano bantam was$39.99 now a standard Shimano bantam is $349.98 that's a $310 price increase in 30 years

I have several I have used for light saltwater (spots, croaker, trout, stripers, Spanish, blues, small reds) since the 80s. Light enough to use all day long, then rinse. The two rivets on the bottom of the frame are the only parts subject to corrosion. Star drag is still smooth as butter. Not enough line for kings or old drum, but has handled slot reds with ease. I love my Abu's too, but these guys are great for how I use them.
