I've been running GX Eagle set up for about 2 and half years and it is awesome. It has to be set up very well. The B-screw, limits, cable tension and nicely lubed chain. My only problem with GX was that the very first chain snapped - one of the plates just peeled itself from the rivet. But since then 0 issues.

The shimano 12 speed derailleurs have a little bend in the lower part of the cage, and the lower pulley looks bent because the cage IS bent, but its by design, The bend is for helping the chain being guided to the front chainring, and to help for the extreme chainline at the top and low end of the cassette. DONT BENT IT BACK. Btw awesome video. I wanna try a gx derailleur and am also paranoid about the clutch tension. Keep it coming!

Don't want a GX shifter. Plastic, breaks easily. Shimano XT 2024 rear derailleur is much finer. When we work with such expensive parts, fine shifting is always an important aspect, isn't it? Sram can't do that. There was never a good selection of parts. I have been involved in servicing for more than 20 years. They always replace Sram with Shimano. Just because he can't stand the long years.

Good summary mate. I've had the slx rear mech only on my Pole with the rest being eagle and full slx with xt shifter on the hardtail. Both 12sp. Slx on the Pole has spent double the time so far compared with any gx ive owned cos they usually bend in the breeze or clutch becomes stuffed. Copped a huge whack and wrapped a branch around the mech and cassette on the hardtail recently and somehow it survived. Clutch still going strong on the mechs as well. Hey thanks for the great vid. I've been a Shimano fan for years but you make a decent pitch for GX. I do wonder though, are you washing your bike regularly? With a pressure washer? My guess is the rusty clutch has something to do with that. Definitely an annoyance though.

I only owned one GX mech, never had issues with the clutch for the year I owned it before moving over to AXS. On my other bike which has a 11spd Shimano XT system, I've had a ton of issues with creaking and inconsistent tension as the clutch wears. This only gets worse if you use an oval where it causes the cage to move back and forth a little all the time. Using grease tends to make the clutch weaker, tensioning the screw makes it bind. If the issue with SRAM is more of a quality control issue, then they need to inspect the production items in smaller batches.
@mtbtelly5522

JNOTECH the shimano clutch seems problematic if you’re not consistently looking after it. I’ve had a heap of gx eagle mechs now and had one fail at the top jockey, and 2 with sloppy clutches. Probably had 6 and 4 of them the clutches were good and adequately tight. So it may well be a quality control issue with the inconsistent clutches

Jonathan Angieri as for the link, I’m having a little play with some theory floating around in my head. If I had a coil shock I’d probably get the link straight away, but with the right air setup its maybe got enough of what it needs. It’s a tricky one, having the clutch too hard makes the suspension performance a lot worse but no one likes a loose clutch because it’s way too loud. Using the SRAM shifter negates the biggest benefit of 12 speed XT. Hyperglide plus allows you to shift multiple gears in both directions. It’s a game changer, especially with wide ranging 1x cassettes. I haven’t used 12 speed GX yet but lots of experience with 11 speed XT, 11 speed GX, and 12 speed XT. 11 speed GX works. Nothing special about it but nowhere near as smooth and refined as 11 speed XT. 12 speed XT shifts more like SRAM, a little louder and clunkier which I didn’t like at first until I started to appreciate hyperguide plus.

Brent Hinkle good insight, I’ve always liked the shimano 11 speed setup. Thats the crispest, most predictable and reliable shifting on the market.
