Dusty Springfield was one of the UK's biggest female pop singers. Check out her music - her voice!!!!

The female vocal is from the late great Dusty Springfield. I credit the PSB with getting me into her work. I loved this song so much and the only song I knew by her before this was Son of A Preacher Man and I now consider her one of my all time favorite female vocalists as well as quite an interesting life story

The female vocalist is the one and only Dusty Springfield (RIP). PSB give a very funny account of what it was like recording with Dusty as she was such a perfectionist, she would almost record a consonant at a time! This track brought Dusty back into the public eye after she’d had a decade or more in the career doldrums.

The guest singer is Dusty Springfield, who had been massive in the sixties - You Don't Have to Say You Love Me, I Only Want To Be With You, Son Of A Preacher Man. They pretty much revived her career and produced half on an album for her later in the eighties. The song was a rare co-write with Allee Willis. It's just her and Neil. Still sounds fresh! The record company wanted Tina Turner! Love her but don't think that would have worked. I think it's about a relationship at cross purposes - he is about money, she wants love, it's never going to work.

I love it when a great track comes up w/ something at the end to make the outtro even better "We don't have to go to war; we don't have to fight. We dont' have to go to hell and back every night" . . . I was 30. those lyrics seemed apropos.

Tons of great and informative comments! I just wanted to say how much I love that percussion at the beginning, like it's being assembled. And Dusty's voice complements Neil's so well. This is pure pop perfection!

2 voices. Neil singing and doing the low spoken parts. Dusty does the harmonies and second vocal parts and the higher outro parts. As previously stated, she was a huge star in the 60s. This effectively resurrected her career , certainly in the UK. PSB went on to record and co-write an album with her a year later. This included two tracks from the soundtrack of the movie 'Scandal' , (about the UK Gov 1960s Pefumo Affair') the tracks "Nothing Has Been Proved" and "In Private", the latter is particularly good. Unfortunately she was diagnosed with breast cancer halfway through the promotional tour of the album and she died soon after.

Interesting fact: the late Allee Willis co-wrote the chorus for Dusty Springfield.

I always found it amusing that in their singles discography, this was the follow up to “It’s a Sin”, which could serve as an answer to the question posed in this song’s title.

This is a great song and collaboration, this song twists and weaves with a great hook. Nothing Has Been Proved a few years later with Dusty was another excellent collaborative outing. As someone else has commented, this is absolutely classic era PSB.

This was a top 10 hit in many countries. I love the alternation between sung and spoken lyrics, Neil has done that on a couple of songs. I think this is their first collaboration with another artist, but many more would follow: Patsy Kensit, Liza Minnelli, Kylie Minogue ,...

OK, we established that West End Girls is crap, but I absolutely loved PSB in this era. They are one of those bands that can get on my nerves when I hear too much of them in one sitting, but when they were good, boy were they good!

@@mattsnider2667 Pet Shop Boys were probably my favourite band when I was in the single digits. I didn't like Go West (when I was in double digits), so I went off them after that.
