This was the most disturbing scene from the movie.

I came here from a clip of Tim Robbins talking about this scene. Apparently Trent's speech at the end there wasn't written by the screenwriter, but was just a shortened version of a real senator's real speech from the time.

Trent is played by Hari Rhodes. Many of you may remember him from the great opening action scene of the movie SHARKY'S MACHINE

I think the best scene is when they're in straitjackets talking on their beds.

Yes. I really liked the character of Trent. He was based on black people who attended white schools and colleges as part of integration during the Civil Rights Movement. He was not only traumatized by the threat of racial violence on the part of white supremacist groups but also the bigotry of low expectations exhibited by people in the Civil Rights Movement attempting integrate schools and colleges. A great performance, too, right up there with William Shatner in I Hate Your Guts / Shame / The Intruder.

This movie was a product of its time. The social commentary was very specific to the 60s(The War on Communism, the H-Bomb, Segregation, …). It wouldn’t translate well today except if you changed all the witnesses stories.
