Saw Rocky do a program on this subject at the USITT conference a few years ago. He had this rig and did a good number of shock load tests. It was very interesting.

Wrong, a steel block arrested by static gear is a poor model for the human body. A human body simply can't generate 4700lbs of force: vertebra would be crushed, limbs ripped off.... it would simply explode. Put another way, 4 large horses, which can pull ~1000lbs each, will rip a human body apart. Or, try hopping off a 12" ledge and crushing a 2-ton jack... good luck! Tests performed on live human subjects, dropped .6m on a 3m steel cable generated forces of 4.3kN... That's twice the distance of your first test , generating 1/5th the force of a steel weight. He never said the steel block was a good model for the human body. He said the steel block would take more force to stop than a human body because all of its weight is arrested at once, while the human body would have their limbs falling slightly later than the majority of their overall weight. This test is harder to pass and will result in safer loading and equipment than your method. You may be technically correct but if you and this guy were selling fall arresters you'd starve.
