Both "speak" and "talk" are English verbs that mean “saying words” in a generic way, instead of referring to conveying specific information. Both can typically be used interchangeably. But not always!
In today’s video we will review:
- 2 important differences between the "speak" and "talk"
- 2 situations in which speak is correct, and talk is wrong
- Examples of idiomatic phrases that only work with either talk or speak, but not both
"Speak" is used in formal contexts: such as when speaking to a boss, CEO, or someone you do not know well. "Talk" is used in informal settings: such as with friends, colleagues, neighbors, etc.
The focus of the verb "speak" is on the speaker. The focus of the verb "talk" is on the speaker and the listener. It implies a conversation or a dialogue.
Here are 2 contexts in which "speak" should be used, not "talk"
1) Speaking on the telephone
2) Referring to languages.
