Like all of my videos, these types of reviews are based on my opinions. I have been playing "Idle Champions" for years now and have about 2-3k hours across both steam and epic. I really do enjoy the game but it absolutely has some pros and cons ESPECIALLY for new players. I hope you enjoy the video, it's been quite litterally months in the making! Idle Level of "Idle Champions" at different game stages: - Early Game (500 hours): 10-20% - Mid Game (1-2k hours): 40-60% - Late Game (3-4k+ hours): 80-90%

agreed the idle level is definitely variable and changes the more you progress. The beginning is the hardest part, but after the first 300-400 hours you start to pick up a rhythm. Not a trait of most idle games tbh, so I agree with mars... this kinda is just desined differently than most idle games.

I probably spend too much time on this game given the fact that I knew exactly when you recorded your game footage based on the event makeup. Seriously though. This is informative, generous to the game in question, and incredibly polished, and I appreciate that. It feels weird that this is such a small channel. You're doing great work. Consider me a fan.

I'm not sure I agree with your evaluation of the idle factor. I've been playing for about 4 months (just passed 2000 hours of the game running, and I'm probably at 'early mid-game' if I'm being realistic) and have found the progression towards idle and automation capability to be much faster than your description implies. You do need a decent number of familiars to field a *full* party or set up an automated gem farm, but there's a lot you can do well before that. I often set a single familiar on leveling my DPS champ in a background party, for example, which lets it progress further before hitting a wall and requiring attention; a brand new player can buy that super-cheap mage hand familiar for gems on their very first day and put it to work in the same way. Once they get a second familiar, they can put it on their tank or a key support. The game gets more and more idle by progressive increments. And I think you're overstating how active a player needs to be in general. It's true that you need to manually level up champions when you're starting out and that, at first, you're going to have to do them one by one, but every run amplifies your gold find, which means that on subsequent adventures you can get many levels all at once, ignore the game for a while, come back to do a bunch of levels in one go again, and repeat. The amount of idling you can do expands a little bit with every run; it's a spectrum, not a binary state that only occurs after you get that 9-familiar or whatever party set up with Modron automation. It's a game that lets you choose a goal, throw together a party, set it aside for a couple of hours, bring it up to tinker for a few minutes, and then put it away again. I find it a very pleasant level of engagement. You just need enough patience to get through, like, a few hours of runs at the beginning that require more attention before you start to feel those results. It's a one-time slow start, and in my opinion it should be savored because it's the baseline from which you grow; you only get to experience it once. In the future, even when you do things where you have no initial favor (time gates, events, new campaigns, etc.), you'll have greater power in the form of equipment, blessings, patron perks, Modron cores, and more that will let your champions get farther with less attention. The game has a very, very smooth long-form progression curve, in my opinion. I have loved "earning" my ability to be idle gradually; it's an exciting and empowering feeling. But this is never going to be a *truly* idle game. It requires management, at the very least when you decide what your current objective should be and set up a party to tackle it. Think of it like this: Each adventure is like a unique puzzle, so you need to take a minute to piece together a solution before you can let it run. If it's just a normal adventure on a campaign you've been working on, though, you probably have a formation already saved; no need to reinvent the wheel. And, depending on how many familiars you have, that formation can partially or fully set itself up, which means that all you need to do is select a mission and hit "Go." On the other hand, you'll occasionally do things like farming favor at your wall that involve actual hands-on play, swapping champions in and out, watching for debuffs to stack, making timely use of ultimate abilities, etc. The video is dead on when it concludes that this isn't a good choice for someone who wants low interaction. Also, on the subject of monetization, while you *can* buy a lot of things that give you a boost, from chests to golden epics to entire new champions, it is almost always poor value to do so. Those things can all be earned through free play (even golden epics, which just represent an item level multiplier), and the leg up that outright buying any of them provides is so small that it really isn't worth it when considered against the scope of the game. The only thing that's actually worth buying is familiars that go on sale at $2.49, like the one you can see at 9:48. That's a worthy and permanent quality of life improvement. Oh, and there are cosmetic skins for champions if you want, too. Everything else is just saving you a bit of time, and do you really want to spend $10 or $20 to effectively skip a tiny fraction of the overall game progression? Even if you spent thousands of dollars, it wouldn't get you very far. So I wouldn't actually call it pay-to-progress... it's more like paying for the illusion of progress. Despite my quibbles, I enjoyed the video and am really excited about this series. It's not always obvious how best to discuss and assess an idle or incremental game, but the format/criteria you've chosen seem quite good and represent logical areas of concern. If I may, I have a short list of suggestions/requests, games that I'm interested in but feel I know little about: Trimps, Melvor Idle, Stuck in Time (used to be called Loop Odyssey), Leaf Blower Revolution, Realm Grinder, Orb of Creation, Spaceplan, and Sandcastle Builder.

Thank you for this comment, took me a while to read it haha. I agree with most of your points, please keep in mind that I have over 3,000 hours in the game across Epic and Steam. I understand (as you can see in the video) how idlebility increases with the amount of familiars you have (which I do mention). On this new account I made for this video alone, I have 2 familiars, which is generally all you need for a low-level gem farm system. I think you hit the nail on the head "Idle Champions is never going to be a truly idle game" and that seems to be the popular consensus. I have a fully automated modron core setup where I am at on my Epic Games account, but this review is for the NEW player who's looking to try out NEW idle games. However for a seasoned veteran like us, yes, you probably can acieve progress to automation faster. I got 4-5 of my friends to try out the game (who enjoy idle games) as a sample for this video and all of them really did not enjoy the level of interaction the first couple hundred hours had. The fact of the matter is a 40% rating for the first 1000 hours at a minimum is more than fair for this game. Cookie clicker (which will be reviewed in this series) would be considered a 100% idle game, this is the standard I am withholding constant through my series. I can't in good faith give this game anything higher than it has compared to other "idle games" because if you boil it down: "idle" champions isn't really that "idle". I understand you CAN fully automate later in the game, and patience is important to achieve that, but that's still something that has to be earned and isn't really in the spirit of an idle-game by definition. My (rough) breakdown of the Idle Level per game stage): Early Game: 20% Mid Game: 60% Late Game: 90% Regardless I really appreciate your opinion, after all this video in-and-of-iteself is an opinion piece. I hope you see my side a bit more clearly, as this isn't a review FOR the veterans who have everything fully automated, it's a review for people looking to pick up a new idle game.

I've played this game since it came out and whenever I get a friend to play they always ask "wait... how is this an idle game". I think new players should just look at it from the perspective that its a party building game, with an earnable idle component after sinking a couple hundred hours in. From a new player perspective I think he was bang on in the video... that's exacty how all my friends feel.

have had this game for a week and the 3 familiars I earned so far for free are plenty enough to play idle with little input from me. I really love the story type of play along with the set it and forget it for the grind that does come with every idle game. Will be playing this one a lot. Thank you for the review.

i honestly would not recommend anyone play this on their phone. buttons are difficult to press, text is quite small and if you have a pill-shaped cut out for your camera like mine does it could come in the way of menus sometimes. ideally you'd want to play it on a PC or a bigger tablet. i will definitely switch to my PC having it in the background. great video!

I really like your criteria. I played Idle Champions since it came out and I also agree: it's not really an idle game. It's more like a dungeon crawler with the ABILITY to earn idle gameplay. I never spent a cent on it but sometimes there are really good deals, but that comes down to your personal opinion. You should try out Idle Research, made by one guy and it's a new idle game on steam, came out like a month ago ish; very cookie clicker esque.

Exactly, the idle experience scales as you play ofc, but at the beginning it's almost non-existent. You need to come back to your device every 5-10 minutes or else you get stuck.

Im about two months in and I will say this game does not explain about how to automate well in game. It wasnt until I went to the discord or watched streams that I started learning how the core game works. There is little tutorial. I was buying the familiars on sale because they were cute and then getting confused as to why my coins were being picked up for me suddenly or distractions were being killed automatically. I also kept ignoring the automation core dialogue because it said it was unfinished until an event forced me to use it to collect the reward. turns out it is super important to having a farm run in the background while you still progress in the game. I play on mobile and there is a warning when you download saying play on pc or tablet instead - I wish I had listened. I can use the tiny buttons because I have small lady hands, but now that there are smaller buttons to switch between characters or save formations available to me and they are very frustrating. I would imagine have to get to a computer to restart would be frustrating too, and I like being able to pull out my phone whenever. My cap is about lvl 400ish right now so I cant say if it crashes later on. I have had no problems so for on my new samsung.

I have a good amount of hours in Idle champions and also in their other but similar (also deserted) crusaders of the lost idols game. Idle champions, definitely not an idle game, it can be with a good amount of familiars but even then it wont be idle game. The truth of the matter is, that whether you like it or not in the current day and age it is as much idle as it is active for the average player. A lot of things in the game require you to be active to start some adventure, in some cases set up an adventure and then complete it etc. in crusaders I could go for good 8 hours without having to do anything sometimes even days with it not having any offline progress or real automation like in this game, but here in idle champions if I am not gem farming and even if I am gem farming I do need to pay attention more often than crusaders. The amount of content is big however for someone like me who can complete area 1000 with multiple restrictions, getting an area 400 requirement variant doesn't do me any good, it is just another chore or another active thing that I need to specifically be active for and then end after under 30 minutes of play time - I cannot make it so it will automatically reset and go next in line. Another problem which I think is a big problem is the whole scripting meta (as well as how you get gems but it is to a lesser extent). It caused inflated item levels which created issues with game balance and essentially made half the characters dead on arrival. They also had over powered characters in crusaders but in crusaders there are 40 seats or so vs the 12 seats in idle champions and getting pretty close to having the same amount of characters in both games + in crusaders the average formation used was 14 slots vs the 10 slots of idle champions. The part of the monetization that bothers me is the fact that the older of a player you are the more money you pay for getting the thing you bought the DLC for. Buying chests and common potions at my level is essentially the same as throwing money to the lake. Its an "idle" game that is not multiplayer. Memory leaks are a thing for the average player, this idle game uses so much ram its not even funny.

Although I played on Kongregate years ago, I now play Idle Champions on Console (PS4) and am really enjoying it so far. Because it doesn't 100% idle like Clicker Heroes v9 for example, I can give it a few hours of semi-interest in an evening, and then turn off the console. I doubt I will ever get to a stage where I leave the game idling by itself on the console, because I will always prefer to use the console to play actual games :-)

I don't disagree with your ratings per se but I do think it is a stretch to say there is almost no idle play until 400 hours into the game. 5 hours into gameplay I was setting up a team with a familiar to click and one to raise click damage and walking away for hours at a time. The 3rd familiar is not hard to get and clicks level up your DPS which is the most important champion. Then I'd walk in the room and click level up on everything and walk away for another hour. The gameplay is very slow early before you get speed champions. Also setting up overnight runs for offline play. It may not be fully idle right away but it is nowhere near zero idle either.

That's fair enough. The fresh account I used for this video earned 2 familiars in about 50 hours ish, which I suppose can count as Idle gameplay. My mentality as I mentioned in other comments is that I am comparing it to REAL idle games like cookie clicker. Those games are the standard for this entire series. Compared to REAL clicker games this game is dwarfed in idle-ability. Saying it has zero, with no context, is wrong and perhaps that's my mistake for not being clear on what I'm comparing it to. But compared to other idle games this game truly doesn't even hold a candle early-game to the definition of "idle".

Yeah like I said I don't have any issue with your rating, I think it is very fair. It is maybe just the tone of how long it takes to become at least quasi idle that I disagree with.

You did miss the opportunity to mention purchasing expiring DLC. You can buy a familiar for as cheap as a few dollars. In this recent pack i had spent to purchase familiar with silver polish potion. To me, this is value. And I'm not gonna pay full price. For a "new" or "new ish" to pay 5 bucks on a familiar every now and hen in your first year of play. That is up to you, but that is not a big ask to be honest. Doing so helps you in the upcoming years of play. If you know you are going to put in those years anyway, commit to familiars sooner. Get polish potions when you can, target optimal skills. All I wanted to point out was the game performance on PS4 where I play. It's not bad, but it is not perfect. Rarely do I crash at random. This does occur, but usually I can play and reset for many hours without issue. If you play up to wave 6-7-800 Things get kinda thick. Ram leak will stack up by then and you should restart the game to manually dump. That will get your frame rate back up. But you often have to deal with stalled play. Low FPS at times. Restart to clear cache and you'll be fine. It is annoying having to wait the minute to do so. If you are playing with multiple parties and pull champions to your current formation. You will probably have to restart or crash. Once you recall a champion or 2. Things get all screwy and will crash. Just reset and it's fine. If you pull champions from an active party, you will likely need to go and visit that party and check in. Sometimes it will remove all specializations from your champions and you have to re tech them. It doesn't always mess things up and stall your progress but it is good practice to go and check in on the party anyway as you may be able to sub in another temp champion to hold place. Right now Valentine and Voronika are problematic. But with some patches, this could get fixed. It is common for new champions to have some bugs that need to be worked out in a couple patches. Here is the issue. When adding Valentine via Nahara Bond skill. Sometimes these added champions will only let you level to level 1. Reset, they will be fine. But sometimes valentine will be there in party but not activating her tregum skill. You can tell because there are no stacks. You have to take nahara out of party. Put her back in, this resets the bonded champions and she will work again. Voronika has on rarest of occasions caused boss waves to stall. This bug may have already been patched I do not see it anymore. This means you will complete a boss wave, but be stuck on that screen not able to move forward. My question is though. Does this game run better on PS4 Pro, or PS5? Bugs aside. I am at a place where I run 4 active parties. I can see the hardware requirement to run all that, I get it. PS4 pro should have better hardware right, be optimized to run PS4 version of the game.. should be better right? PS5 is a more powerful console. Should be better right?

100% agree with everything you said. I would personally give the idle level lower than 40% something like 30-35%. I don't think it's an idle game at all tbh it's just a random game that can be idle later. Also you are very conservative with your cash level. THIS IS THE MOST MONETISED "IDLE" GAME EVER!!! So many packages, so many microtransactions you should have gave them 70% not 50% for a FTP game. So pay to win. My friend caught up with me after spending money and I have been playing for months!!! Awful monetization model soo OP
