This is so beautiful! Written in Bavaria where my cousins are from. Silent Night is my favorite all-time song. I sing it not just at Christmas but all year long. I sang it as a lullaby to my son when he was just a few months old and he learned to hum along with me. It was so beautiful. Mother & Child. This song is straight from heaven!

A favourite Christmas hymn for so many people, including me. At school, over 60 years ago, in the middle of the 2nd world war, we learned it in German from our German language teacher, a refugee from Nazi persecution. I have never forgotten the words of the 1st verse, and it was wonderful to hear it sung so beautifully.

The gospel is not about any ‘universal language.’ It’s about the universal disease of sin and the unique Son of God whose death on the cross redeems from sin and death all those ordained to eternal life because they believe in Him.

My dear friend the English version that you know is a translation of the German original Stille Nacht that is rewnowned all over the world. Its music is by Franz Gruber and text by Joseph Mohr have been translated into practically every language. It was hastily composed since the organ at St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf, was broken. Mohr gave his poem to his friend Gruber and its simple score for guitar accompaniment was finished just in time for the midnight mass of 1818. ..

This was taken in the early 90s so hence the hairdo and the earring. All the singers are Austrian, apart from the conductor who is British. Hope that clears things up ;-) Merry Christmas everyone!

Together with Joseph Mohr, a Catholic priest who wrote the original German lyrics, Gruber composed the music for the Christmas carol Silent Night. On Christmas Eve of 1818, Mohr, an assistant pastor at St Nicholas, showed Gruber a six-stanza poem he had written in 1816. He asked Gruber to set the poem to music. The church organ had broken down so Gruber produced a melody with guitar arrangement for the poem. The two men sang Stille Nacht for the first time at Christmas Mass in St Nicholas Church while Mohr played guitar and the choir repeated the last two lines of each verse.

The origin of the Christmas carol we know as Silent Night was a poem that was written in 1816 by an Austrian priest called Joseph Mohr. On Christmas Eve in 1818 in the small alpine village called Oberndorf it is reputed that the organ at St. Nicholas Church had broken. Joseph Mohr gave the poem of Silent Night (Stille Nacht) to his friend Franz Xavier Gruber and the melody for Silent Night was composed with this in mind.
