Could you go into more detail on how you set the fan up. I can tell it's a small, and relatively cheap, cooling fan but what steps did you do to convert it to run on the power bank. Love you man but you're a little late to the game on this one! Most people no longer print in ABS due to its difficulty to print without warping or delamination (a heated bed only assists the first few layers). No one has found a suitable solution however for plastics other than ABS, so I do use the hot vapour method (faster, more control but admittedly puts a non-flame heat source into the mix) when I want to get those glossy prints. Interesting you found the fan to help - in my testing the fan made the effect less consistant and it quickly began to crack and craze due to the Acetone.

ABS is not the more commonly used material for printing, most people use PLA and this doesnt work on it
@Hellsong89
7 жыл бұрын
ABS is more commonly used in professional 3D printing cause its durability compared to PLA and easier smoothing with vapor bath. PLA other hand is more used by amateurs cause its easiest material to print. For the smoothing, you can smooth some PLA materials with acetone, but it may need some mechanical assistance. You can also acetone glue two PLA parts together depending again maker of the material.. my guess is that some of the PLA's contain some ABS what reacts to acetone, so go figure.

I think the spark may not have ignited inside the glass because there wasn't enough oxygen inside. When you drop the match you can see it lights from the outside where the acetone fumes meet the oxygen, then burns inwards. If the spark was at that interface, ignition would be more likely to occur.

Could you do a video on making one of those "spark discharge" or "de-static" things that some chemists and electronics experts use? Often home computer repair guys make their own, and it's a way to remove any excess built up charge so that you don't get a static shock and ruin any electronics or cause any combustion. Apparently people buy keychain versions, make their own that look like a plate they touch when they sit at their desk... or other neat stuff like a little antenna with an LED that lights up if you have any static charge.. I just figured this little project was right up your alley.

You can attempt some using a heat gun. But that can be tricky and more often then not ruin things. The preferred method for PLA that the Cosplayers use extensively for their stuff is a product called XTC3D. It's a 2 part epoxy resin that you paint on. It's thin, self levels, and fills in the lines leaving a smooth surface. It's best for things you plan on painting as you can see a sort of clear shell around the object. Once cured the resin surface can also be sanded and finished.

There is a setup guide for Simplify3D if you google "PTEG Settings" that gets you amazing results. PTEG is great because you can paint and glaze it for an amazing finish. I must add the Anet A8 is a great printer with an awesome modding community. Thingiverse has an entire printable upgrade kit for it... Overall I am super happy with the results, especially after cruising the net and seeing prints from other models that do not look half as good. Thanks!! Some delivery companies are like that. DHL is one of them. Also, the government is greedy and they want you to pay taxes hence the customs.

You do risk paying high duty for large sized items. The amount paid is approx 20% of the perceived value, not what you paid for it. So here your customs conned you by valuing your printer at 500 EUR

Justo Talkalottashit huh? A chemist is a pharmacy is all i was saying. You can get a little bottle of acetone that says ingredients:acetone for a couple of bucks at the drug store, at least in florida. Its much cheaper at home depot though.

Hello, I just bought an Anet A8, it prints its own improvements like a chain and tensioners for the bed and X axis and the prints are surprising, with that said I hope you put a little more content on 3d printer its a great tool to learn, thanks for your tips! big fan!

I had just about given up with a spool of a Formfutura ABS called ClearScent, wretched stuff wouldn't stick to anything! But the ABS slurry idea sounded promising so I gave it a go and indeed it worked perfectly first time :) thank you

Um, I wouldn't use a cooling fan for ABS, that can lead to some issues with warping (I've tried it). I really like this approach to vapor smoothing though, as you don't have to pull the print out of the chamber, just take the chamber off. What a great idea!

60% Scottish 20% Irish 13% German 6% Arabian 1% Moorish Bit eclectic mix to be sure, but there you have it. YAY ANCESTRY! Great vidya mate, learned a good bit, may see about building a small vapor chamber just for this.

I use an old stainless steel box (about the size of a block carton of beer) with old work shirt material masking taped inside to the two long sides (soak half a capful of Acetone on each side). A folded over layer of aluminium foil on the bottom stops the print from sticking to the box. It works a treat :)

Acetone is easy to get. You don't have to get it from a chemist. I can go and buy a gallon and be back in an hour or less with it if I needed it. Go to Homedepot, Lowes or even Walmart sometimes has it. Some hardware stores may even have it. If none of those places have it, brake parts cleaner from an auto parts store is mostly acetone or even 100% depending on the brand. Most of them (here in the USA) are labeled with all of the ingredients but maybe without the quantity added to the list.

To speed up the process you might experiment with chilling the model so the vapors condense on it faster. Many years ago we used to prank restaurant greeters by using my mother in laws Polish maiden name, Szczygielski, instead of my common 4-letter Irish name. Fun ensued when they tried to pronounce it.

A kindly reminder from a chemist: Don't use cotton gloves because they are useless. Standard nitril-rubber gloves or latex gloves usually works fine for 5-10min in direct contact with acetone. Also, with that small amounts you even can work without gloves, just use a skin creme right after it ;)
