Rear projection, more like. That's a big part of why Kubrick's movies are so incredible, he didn't have any computers to blue screen with. You watch 2001 like "Okay meh what's the big deal?" Even the fictional computers running the spaceship in the movie wouldn't have been theoretically powerful enough to make the movie's effects.

These cutaways work better than the ones shown on Family Guy because they're either real flashbacks or daydream sequences that actually have something to do with the plot of the episode or act as a punchline to a previously built up joke. Family Guy cutaways, on the other hand, not only have very little to do with the plot of the episode, but also, try to be their own separate joke with almost no build up or punchline whatsoever.

One thing I can say about these: they tie in to the plot, they are relevant to what's said, don't overstay their welcome and holy fuck they're not all kickstarted with a metaphor or simile like "this is like X when Y did Z". Not gunna bash every family guy cutaways cause some of them are genuinely funny and I understand that not everything said or shown has to be directly relevant to the story, letting the animators, writers and voice actors to do some dumb shit without much consequence or need to drag the story far out the way but they can stand to 1. Not let them take so long (like IIRC there was one where stewie was insulting a celebrity in a bar for a minute+ straight what had no punchline and no humour) and 2. Simpsons cutaways actually had something to do with the story, and didn’t drag too long unless necessary. Family Guy cutaways are very pointless and only exist just to poke fun of pop-culture. I think what people don't realise is that the ways the Simpsons & Family Guy do cutaways are different, yet suitable for their shows. The Simpsons is more grounded in reality and structure, whereas Family Guy is wackier and more free-flowing. It's why these cutaways, as well as the best FG ones, work so well- The Simpsons uses it to add to the humour, whilst Family Guy uses it to diversify their humour's subject matter.

These sequences work a little better and feel less random and forced because more often than not it’s a flashback or someone imagining things. 4:26 If this was Family Guy, Peter would try to clap, only to for a gorey bloodiest of a squish to happen of his corpse with the entire audience screaming and running away and then explain the joke with him looking at the viewer emotionless saying: “I tried to clap with my hands stuck to the vending machines and then I squashed myself and know I am a bloody skeleton with eyeballs. Now laugh.”

The Simpsons understands that a cutaway gag is a cutaway gag. And not a non sequitur
@bombabombom3603
Жыл бұрын
These early cutaway gags were the prototypes for Al Jean and Mike Reiss' The Critic, where it was heavy-set on cutaway gag-humor. Then Seth McFarlane watched both shows and said "let's remove the fat of writing actual characters and just steal a bunch of jokes while making nothing but references under the guise of parody. CONWAY TWITTY RIIIIICK" ....then modern Simpsons decided to inbred itself by ripping off Family Guy's formula, creating the cycle of no actual comedy.

'Lacrimose' is to 'dyspeptic' as 'ebullient' is to 'effervescent'. Is it, though? 'lacrimose' means 'weepy, tendency to cry', and 'dyspeptic' means 'angry, annoyed'. Not opposites, per se, but both responses to negative situations. 'Ebullient' means 'happy' and 'effervescent' means 'lively', so I guess that's both responses to positive stimulations? I'm not sure, I'd have to see the other options. If anything, this makes Barney's missed academic opportunity potentially less sad.

Cutaways was once a unique faucet of humour that when used properly made the perfect touch. Family Guy, lacking the ability to create good plot and tie it to humour just overused cutaways as a lazy crutch. Cutaways were interesting back in the glory days before bad writers ruined it for everyone.

These aren't "cutaways". They are either flashbacks, daydreams or jump cuts to other characters in actual situations that either already happened, are happening or will happen, to illustrate what was just referenced by the primary characters. These are all standard storytelling devices. What Family Guy does is just random, irrelevant nonsense. You would never see Homer say anything like: "that time I was Sandy Duncan's glass eye".
