Thanks for much for the film. I'm writing a mini-fiction based on early Singapore. Watching this film is better than reading through history books. (I really need to know how early Singapore looks like rather than text description of how it looks like)

Another world. Another time. Surreal. Good afternoon from Singapore🌤🌴🌺⏳🐎🏇🛴✈🛸 Good to see in the very old footage the Chinese rickshaws in Singapore which was quite forgotten. Many years ago, I dreamed of arriving at a city and on the streets, people and rickshaw pullers were fleeing in all directions!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singapore Singapore .....After many heated ideological conflicts between the two governments (the Singapore state government and the Malaysian central government), on 9 August 1965, the Malaysian Parliament voted 126 to 0 (with Singaporean delegates not present) to expel Singapore from Malaysia.[31][32] [33].Singapore gained independence as the Republic of Singapore (remaining within the Commonwealth of Nations) on 9 August 1965.[31]...... A symbol of Singapore, the Merlion was created in 1964. Unless you know where you came from........

@@ken61175 The current government of SG indeed lied. They said that SG was made prosperous by the incumbent party, before that it was a back water fishing village with only attap houses and fishing nets and ppl living in utmost poverty... Sure looks like it from the film?

@@SingSnags Those rickshaw pullers were mainly coolies from China who were sold as slave "piglets" since the Qing Dynasty and continued for few decades after the end of imperial rules. They did not grow up in SG, they were sold by their emperor. Chinese merchants were as rich as some colonisers too, but Europeans brought Western civilisations, inventions and modern educations to many uncultivated places in this region. Be respectful of history and not be bias base on wealthiness and power among races of people...

ken bibi, you must not understand sarcasm. Original poster seem to think that the video showed a prosperous Singapore. A few were prosperous but most were dirt poor migrant workers. Do you even know the history of Singapore or for that matter, the countries from which it attracted people from? Other than the Malays, the others were mostly migrant workers, not rich merchants. Some were prisoners from India, sent to build roads and the likes. Most Chinese migrants were dirt poor, choosing to leave their motherland and find work in Nanyang, meaning Malaysia and Singapore. Most were not sold as slaves by their emperor.
