1970... this song was their 2nd huge hit of the year, following their first huge hit, "close to you" which reached #1 on the charts, this song "we've only just begun" reached #2 that year and was and remains one of the greatest and most used wedding songs of all time.. by the way, KAREN CARPENTER WAS ONLY 20 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME! AND SINGING LIKE THIS! OTHERWORLDLY INCREDIBLE! THE VOICE OF 2 LIFETIMES, THEN AND NOW HER VOICE IS CONSIDERED ONE OF IF NOT THE GREATEST FEMALE POP VOICE OF LOVE AND ROMANCE SONGS EVER! surely the most pure, rich, intimate, movingly warm beautiful voice you'll ever hear! she was also a worldclass drummer and her brother who arranged their songs was also a world class pianist.. she sang lead, he sang back-up and they sang ALL of the harmonies and background voices themselves!...... they were also the biggest u.s. hitmakers of the 1970's with more than 12 top ten pop classics and many more songs that reached the top 40 and top 100....

Karen Carpenter was a megastar by any standards. Even as a metalhead, I still love her vocals and the beautiful tunes her and her brother wrote. She had one of those silky voices that was so smooth it melts one's heart. The world lost her too soon. :( I still remember the day she died. We were young, not exactly newlyweds but only a few years in. We could only afford one car in those days, and on THAT day, my wife dropped me off at work, and she took the car to her job. At 5:00PM I was standing outside by the security guard shack waiting for her to pick me up. I heard the throaty rumblings of the dual exhausts on my old 65 Buick Skylark muscle car even before she pulled into the parking lot. As I walked to the passenger door to hop in, she leaned over toward the open window and said, "I just now heard on the radio Karen Carpenter died!!" I was so shocked I couldn't believe it, as I was unaware of her many medical problems at that time. All I knew of her was this gorgeous young lady only a couple of years older than me with such a beautiful voice and long stellar career ahead of her...... she'd only just begun! One could almost say she was the Floor Jansen of the day to my ears. And now she was gone in the flash of a cold, dry radio announcement. Just like that. I was "messed up" about it for a couple of weeks before I came to grips with the reality. ;(

Much the same for me. I was in college. She had a voice like honey. There’s been no singer like her since. Definitely my favorite all-time female vocalist and made it look so easy. Richard said she never needed a warm up; could awake at 3a.m. And sing like that. They also say she had a 4 and a half octave range, but always sang low because “the money’s in the basement.” If I hear her played outside of the home these days it’s at Christmas, when her beautifully clear voice brings in Christmas. Even today, almost 40 years since we lost her, her voice makes me wistful. The saddest part was she never found the romantic love she deserved. When she sings “Goodbye to Love” it’s like her autobiography. Through those difficult days after her loss, it seemed so tragic. I often wonder how she would respond today to the fact that she is today loved and revered around the world by more people than she could ever have imagined. How lucky we are to have had her voice and her brother’s musical genius. God gave the music world a true gift if talent with this lady. We still love her.

You're not the only metal head who loves Karen Carpenter, and appreciate their songs. I've been a metal head since I was 14, and now at 50, I am still a metal head, and love/miss Karen Carpenter, and love their songs.

@@exquisitesplendor7175 At 66, I was a metalhead at the time the term "heavy metal" was first applied to music. It was, of course, taken from the famous lyric of Steppenwolf's Born To Be Wild, "I like smoke-n-lightnin', heavy metal thunder!" A magazine reviewer of the day coined the term as a name for a whole genre that followed. I lost my metal head for decades when the U.S. music market took a turn for the blaaahhhh. I rediscovered it at age 54 in 2008 when I stumbled upon Nightwish and heard them perform Ghost Love Score with Tarja Turunen at the Hartwall Arena! But I'll never forget Karen Carpenter! :( So beautiful.

Karen's voice is liquid gold. Unfortunately her brother Richard doesn't get the acclaim he deserves. Not only is he a remarkable musician he had a golden ear and picked almost all of their songs, co wrote and arranged a majority. It wasn't long before the record comapny realized how talented he was. He was so accomplished he was producing their albums very early on and at a very young age.

I love how Karen didn't use or even need any vocal fireworks. No multi-note runs or other “show-off” tricks. Just singing the melody with a gracious ease and simplicity. Her voice provided all the magic. Also, those GORGEOUS harmonies! Richard really knew how to compose. For a treat, be sure to look up Karen's drumming videos. She was originally a drummer, and preferred it to singing. She was one of the greatest drummers of any era...such a super talent!

Hi MrsPP. I first heard this song when it was sung by it's co-writer Paul Williams. It was originally used as a jingle for a Crocker Bank advertisement around 1970. Richard Carpenter heard the jingle and loved it. He contacted Mr. Williams and asked him if their was a fully completed version of the song? As we all only heard a verse or so in the jingle. When Richard received the full version, he retooled the arrangement for Karen to sing. It was their follow up single to their first #1 single, Close To You. We've Only Just Begun was a huge hit. Richard has said he feels it is the song that best represents the Carpenters sound. I've been looking forward to you discovering the Carpenters. And MrsPP, you've ''only just begun' discovering the Carpenters. Rainy Days And Mondays is another classic song by the Carpenters that you may want to consider reacting to. Happy New Year, RNB

My personal favorite of all the Carpenters' discography was "Goodbye To Love." Even though Karen's incredibly beautiful voice was always the main attraction for me in all their songs, the one extra hook in Goodbye that pushes it over the top as my favorite is the long, killer guitar solo at the end!

Music like this from the Carpenters is sadly dead and long gone today, replaced with grotesque computer generated audio pollution and cheap gimmicks. If Karen Carpenter were alive and just starting, trying to break into music today in 2023 she wouldn't stand a chance because she has too much talent, she doesn't show enough bare skin and recite vulgar lyrics. This song "We've only just begun" was originally written for a bank commercial believe it or not. Look it up.

And also Karen Carpenter played the drums. She was actually a drummer and a singer. She started out playing drums in jazz band. You can find videos of her doing drum solos on KZitem. This song is the one my High School voted to play as we Seniors walked in on our last High School auditorium gathering with all classes. It fit very well with us preparing to enter the world as being full adults. 1976, the USA Bicentennial year.

This was literally the playout to my cousin's wedding video in 1982 (when I was a 9 year old brat). Now supernaturally in love with a new partner, Karen's vocals tell a truth that won't ever burn out.

A very good 2021 to you. Karen Carpenter's voice is just stunning (almost as stunning as your beauty). I love Karen's show with Ella Fitzgerald kzitem.info/news/bejne/qXqmn5Zvnougf4I particularly when ella comments on Karen's voice at kzitem.info/news/bejne/qXqmn5Zvnougf4I&t=3m26s she says "so pretty" or "something pretty". Keep filling our hearts with admiration of the beauty.
