Back in the late 80s/early 90s everyone used risers, (here in London) partly due to wheel size but mainly to stop pressure cracks in the deck. Even when the wheels got smaller for a couple of years people still used risers, in fact shock pads. This changed the feel of the board giving way more pop and a nice warm sound.

I put the risers on Thunders with forged wheelbase to make them higher and reduce wheelbites. Got higher pop, better impact protection for the board when landing tricks and better absorption of rough asphalt on the streets. I made mine from bycicles inner tire, that way I can stack as much as I need to get to my comfortable height. These are made from polyurethane (same as bushings and wheels) so it can unscrew your hardware a bit after a few weeks of riding

man i went a similar way and slammed hard because they flexed and were unpredictable. you might have more skill than me i guess. im not pro level but i have been skating since 85. these were 1/8 shock pads with 97a 56mm nano cubics on 169 titanium indys on semi smooth asphalt. i felt them flex and then bounce back and my wheels just stopped sliding. boom physics took over from there. and gravity. worst hip injury i have ever had

The risers aren't made for any particular brand truck. If you turned them around they would stick out the opposite direction and wouldn't effect and slides etc. I have diamond risers on my setup and they stick out a bit but I face them so it sticks out towards the center of my board instead of the nose/tail. I grew up riding risers and then stopped for years and now I have returned to riding them on my current setup

holy shit man, I literally JUST got risers for my hollow lights because the baseplate is so tiny and they felt rly low I love em so far - nice deep sharp turning and better pop. My biggest gripe with all Thunders is the pushed in baseplate, which doesn't even touch on most nose/tailslides

I tried to get used to riding thunders like normal... but they always feel to low for me and I can’t get the timing or pop right. but when I set them up with 1/8” risers & it’s perfect for me- basically brings the 148s up from 52mm to 55mm. Then the timing and feel of the pop is just right for me. I can pop from the tip of the tail or pop from the pocket and they both feel good with the riser. Without the riser I felt like I had to pop from the edge/tip of the tail or it didn’t work at all. But I like popping from the pocket for a lot of stuff, so that wasn’t working for me. The only thing is that they lose the manual and quick turn feeling for me. I really love how Thunders turn and the control you have - they are (to me) so responsive and quick to lock in to balance when manualing. So as far as turning and manual control goes, it no longer feels like a Thunder. But for my pop timing, it makes all the difference to have the risers on. (I ride 54-56mm wheels)

I think that´s the question. Pop time. It´s what your muscular memory is used to. I´m current on a 55mm tall truck and ordered a 49m low and gonna see if helps me, cause I´m having problems with timing.

I have to ride 92a or less because of metatarsal pain. My experience so far with 78a, 86a, 90a, 92a: - with soft wheels, when you 180 or 360 you can't cheat by sliding to the full rotation and have to be better at landing straight. I think it's actually good practice to make you do true 180s/360s - 78a-86a wheels "bounce" a little more to me when landing tricks. so if you are a little off-kliter you slightly bounce after 1st landing - 90a-92a, i dont feel much bounce. Mostly ride like 99a to me, but just can't slide as much Eventually I am stuck on riding 90a Autobahn Torus wheels. Stoked on them actually. The next best for me is 92a Ricta Clouds. The Rictas are a little wider, so heavier, the Autobahns are a skinny wheel, so very light and because skinny, easier to slide or slide into 180s/360s than Rictas or 78a/86as

Hey Ben legit videos by the way learning a lot just thought if you ever buy more risers try to get the ones with adjustable slots rather than holes so then the baseplate can line up nicely on any truck with out overhang to get caught up on nose slides but maybe that’s just me being ocd haha

Started skating again after a few years and picked up a board for cruising. But the baseplate on the thunders is smaller than the indie risers - like in the video. Is that in any way a negative (e.g. stress cracks, wheel bite/mobility, etc) or trivial factor?

But is it in between a thunder and a Indy? When I half can feeble to fakie on a round rail with thunders my board touches before my trucks do and it throws me way off. I’m also falling off my board left and right after skating Indy’s for 7 years and having the grace to wheel bite or bomb a hill.
@chrislleigh

Hey Ben :) wondering if you can help me with something.. I currently ride an 8.125 (zero) on Indy 139’s and 52mm wheels. I quite like this height but I want to go up to an 8.25 deck (zero again). I’ve already discovered that the length will be 0.2” longer than the 8.125 but the wheel base will be the same (14.25”). Obviously I will also need to change my trucks if going up to 8.25, so my question is will the slightly bigger/longer board mean a slightly higher/steeper nose and tail? The reason I ask is because I’m trying to decide if I go with thunders this time as they are 2.5mm lower than Indy’s to keep a similar pop height (if that makes sense) like I’m getting on my current setup if the nose and tail were ever so slightly higher/steeper. And then stick with the 52mm wheels
@marius________

I'm not Ben and you probably found a solution already - but 8.25 and Indy 139 is a perfectly fine combination if you're on a budget and like your old trucks. I don't think there will be much difference considering the slightly bigger length if you stay with the same trucks. Indys vs Thunder (with risers) will be noticeable. I also recommend getting used parts in good condition from classified ads for trying out different setups. If you don't like it you can resell it for the same price and get something else.

I grew up (33 now) with world industries boards, and grind king trucks. so far, hearing reviews, what it sounds like is independent trucks are actually good (back then seemed normal) and thunders are good. toy machine almost sounds a like better industries(maybe), and if you can balance your board with either independent or thunders, low high, and board length from the bolts on inside, you can get a decent feeling ride (taking into consideration your wheel size, shape/hardness, bearings) I like spitfire wheels and ppl recommend red bones bearings. grip tape idk, just sponsored youtubers talking about it and brands (maybe more coarse lasts longer... but less shoes? idk I never change grip, so old more fine grip tape is what everything turns into, never even thought about grip tape, just my shoes.. and glue.. more glue.) independent/spitfire/reds/ board im lost on because no one does a comparison to world industries and other decks, or birdhouse, what feels like those?
