When transitioning in hockey, we want to slightly pick our feet up off the ground briefly so as not to drag our blades, which can create friction (slowing us down) or even cause us to trip. We also want to avoid crossing our feet over and instead open our hips and point our toes the way we want to go. When we crossover, we take away our ability to transition again quickly.
Remember to start transferring your weight just a moment before you actually start the transition and try to point your stick, head and upper body the way you want to transition and go. This will help you actually move in the new direction faster.
