At Merthyr's annual Battle of the Martyrs boxing competition, locals throw punches for charity. Rachel is competing. She's also been battling addiction and is determined to get to university.
*Rachel is an inspiration. She's overcome her addiction, poverty and the sad death of her sister in such terrible circumstances. Hopefully she'll find success and happiness in her life.*

In Canada you can work while collecting disability benefits as long as it doesn't exceed $200 a month. Anything over the $200 is deducted dollar for dollar. This encourages people to work and contribute what they can ... even if it is only a few hours a month it makes them feel useful. Cutting benefits for 16 hours a week is only making people not want to work and just stay on benefits.

When I left Merthyr the begining of1965, never to return the major employers in the town were. Hoovers, Teddington Aircraft Controls, Kayser Bondor, Triang, Toys, Thorn Electric, Guest Keen. Reploy, and possibly others I've forgotten. They're all long gone, and nothing much has replaced them. that's what happened to Merthyr. There was a brief glimpse of the bottom of 1st Avenue, Galon Uchaf, including the house I grew up in, 1942 to 1951.
