I show seven different methods and how to level restoration and sadly there are none to cheese it. Restoration XP is earned by healing yourself, healing others, or “healing” the undead. You gain XP by how much health is healed meaning you or the target can't have full health and receive XP. Wards Grant XP based on how much damage is absorbed but other sources say XP is earned by just flashing the ward up for less than a second during combat. This will work best with the mage stone and any equipment that can decrease restoration costs or increase your Magicka.
Self-harm and heal. There are many ways to cause damage to yourself, such as falling too far, activating a trap, or getting attacked by a wolf or another weak creature. I chose the High Hrothgar wind gate. I could quickly make my way up to it, but there are some ruins with pressure plates that catch you on fire that will work equally as well. Depending on your difficulty settings and current magicka pool, regen rate, and cost reduction you could just rubber band your controller or rebind a key and AFK it.
Hurt horse and heal. Horses have a lot of health, especially in higher difficulty. You can equip fire and healing hands to simultaneously hurt and heal your horse getting you both restoration and destruction XP. Once again depending on your current magicka pool, regen rate, and cost reduction you could just rubber band your controller or rebind a key and AFK it. But since horses are outside there is a chance of a dragon attack. Use it with caution.
Repel lesser undead. For this one, you will need a repel undead or repel lesser undead. Colette Marence will have to repel lesser undead available once you reach 40 in restoration. I was using it in Bleak Falls Barrow having all the draugr follow me through and using it on as many as possible and it was rather effective. Or use the Ritual Stone, resurrect a bunch of draugr, and use it on them. Ritual Stone is found directly east of Whiterun.
Conjure undead and turn lesser undead. This one is simple, buy the cheapest undead conjuartion such as a skeletal minion from Phinis Gestor, and use the turn undead spell on him. Once your Magicka runs out wait an hour and repeat.
Healing and Equilibrium. This one can be done AFK with buttons being held down. But equilibrium can only be found towards the end of the College of Winterhold questline. By the time you were to get to the spell, you probably could have already gotten it to 100 two or three times with the ritual spell and repel lesser undead.
Circle of Protection. This one can level you up very fast but the drawback is that it does not show up until you have level 75 in restoration. Just spam it in your house and you'll get the XP.
Ranked least to most effective
1. Healing and Equilibrium - By the time you have it that time could have been better spent just leveling up with the next 2
2. Healing and Self-harm - It was leveling pretty decently but the problem with self-harm is that it’s possible to die.
3. Horse and Healing Hands - Horse can’t die, after you wait the first time the horse will not move again unless an enemy comes nearby.
4. Conjure Undead and Turn Lesser Undead - This can get started pretty easily. Go into a controlled area, summon the undead, use the spell on him, and repeat.
5. Repel Lesser undead - Very effective if you can use it on many draugr at once. Even more effective with the ritual stone.
6. Circle of Protection - This one does not show up until you’re very late into restoration but it is worth it if you plan on resetting it. Cast the spell until you’re out of Magicka, wait an hour, and repeat until you get to your desired level. As I said it does not show up in Colette's inventory until your restoration is at level 75.
Honorable Mention - Guardian Circle. 10 casts of the spell with the guardian stone will take you from 15 to 33 but to get the guardian circle you will need 100 in restoration and the quest “Good Intentions” complete for the college of Winterhold which is pretty much halfway through their questline. Complete a mission for Collete and she give or allow you to buy the spell. The main drawback is that you already need 100 restoration and it has a base cost of 716 Magicka. So yeah, use it if you want. I will not be.
The best way I can think of it is to hurt and heal your horse until restoration 40, repel lesser undead until 75, and then buy a circle of protection from Colette and use that until 100. It will probably take around an hour but will get faster the second time around due to having Circle of Protection.
