do you know that value of that log if you would have milled it up in 8/4-10/4 slabs. OMG, i almost cried when i seen it being cut into smaller pieces. i would love to have some of that for my game calls

Thank you so much. I have 48" dia spalted maple from 200? yr old sugaring trees here in Huntington VT. Just could not get the blanks right until I saw your approach. WIll save me so much time getting the blanks from bandsaw to the lathe. in one 8 foot pirce I found a 6 foot heavy chain burried inside but just visable on the outside. Will cut that one last. Thanks again!

Just what I needed, thanks. Yes, it does need a lot of work to be a complete “Woodworking Bible”, but Hyezmar’s book is still in draft status and available for all to download.

Very good to see how to brake down a log. What did you do with the blanks after they were cut up. I have herd all sorts of ideas on how to let the wood dry.

Thanks for that, I learned more than a little just watching this video. If you see this question would you mind commenting a little on how you treat the blanks from this point? How are they sealed and stored and for how long? Thanks Steve

Steve It all depends on the wood and your location. Many N. American dry fairly fast (Ash, Maples, Poplars). Walnuts much slower. Most my bowls will store from 3 to 5 months before I return them.

Mike, how do you store your bowl blanks to keep them from checking before you get time to turn them? Wax them?

Hay Mike, Thanks I just was given a 30" English Walnut. I need to get it fast. Your video will help me with cutting it. After you cut the slabs how do you stabilize them? Did you do a video on that.

When I chain saw I put on chain saw chaps and a helmet with face shield and ear protection. If you are doing casual cutting most 16" chain saws can run a longer bar. For example I can run a 28" bar on my old Homelite 360 for cutting bowl blanks. For dropping trees and cutting firewood I only use a 16" or 20" bar.

what kind of chainsaw are you using? Power? bar size? A special chain? Most of my logs are smaller but ... every once in awhile I get access to a bigger one. Now I'll know how to handle it. thank you, lucy

I've got a 5' D silver maple that's still standing @ 15-20'. One of the branches coming off the crotch is 36". Topped it a year ago. I got 75 burls out of it from 6"-24". Wanna come over and cut this trunk up for me? I'm in Boise. ;)

Hi Mike, I understand you are going for maximum yield here but does it not matter to you that the grain is not centered/balanced on some of these bowl blanks? Thanks, Tim
@Bowlmaker60

This particular log is too big to think that way except until I get into the middle of the tree. This whole tree is quilted and shows well without balance
