"Square" is a term that refers to someone being too rigid and "goody two shoes". A square exemplifies straight edges, someone being too straight (not the sexual orientation) in the way they deal with things. You've never heard the phrase "be there or be square"? Like, it means you're boring or not very exciting because you do everything by the book.
