Thank you for the review and I wish you a good week too...as I type this, a good weekend. ;-) I actually am used to the Olight UI (user interface). If you think about it there is also an advantage. You can always hold the switch down to go to the lowest light level. If you tap you go to the memorized, last used mode. You might like the user interface Olight installed on their Javelot. You hold the side switch in for the light to come on, but then you tap it to change levels. If you need instant on you use the tail switch. The only advantage is that it is one bit of protection from hitting the side switch and having this extremely bright light come on accidentally. Generally speaking though it drives me nuts (so I know how you feel) and I keep wondering if it got installed by mistake....either that or they did it to mesh with the tail switch. The other possibility is they are seeking converts from other brands that have a different UI. ;-)

I got the ti version of this light on Black Friday sale. Swift delivery of over $400 of lights I bought. Along with two free gift lights. I’m an electrician and I must say I love this light. I use it as EDC atm. Be aware of the lock out mode. If you hold on button to get moon light then continue to hold it’ll go into lockout. I found this by accident while trying to cycle modes and thought I broke it lol. To get out of lockout release and continue to hold until it works again.

I just don't understand why people insist on using white lights at night!! I hope I never have to camp overnight with someone who breaks one out. I might knock them in the head with it. I prefer a red light during dark hours as they taught us in the Navy. Easier on the eyes and less strain. I have an iProtec 500 Dual 4X Zoom myself that is USB rechargeable on my nightstand in case of power outage during the night. Great flashlight and has red light built-in also. I’ve found sometimes olights will not turn on if the battery is “overcharged” (voltage too high). I’ll put the battery in a different light, run it for a little bit, and then it will work in the olight. Your external charger may have put a little too much voltage into it. Most external charged charge to 4.2 volts. I dont think the magnetic charging gets it quite there.

The problem you had with it awkwardly not working I think may have been one of the subtly safety features. If you ever so slightly start to unscrew it, it immediately shuts off. Like, almost less than ⅛ of a turn. Personally I kind of like that feature. Nothing worse than digging for a flashlight only to find it's dead from accidentally getting turned on. Maybe not the issue you had, but a feature I thought I'd share. 😊

Couple questions, first when you cycle through the modes and turn the flashlight off does it return to the mode you left it at or a default mode? Second if it does stay in the mode that you preset, say Moon mode and you double tap it for 2000 lumens, does it return to your preset mode or to 2000 lumens when you turn it back on?
@subaruforester5062

Yes it's got a memory. so it will turn on in last mode used. If your in 2000lumens and you shut it off it will remember that mode for 10 mins. Anything after that it will default into a medium mode

Hi, great review, thanks! Re the issue: Olight propriety cells have protection circuit on cap where both + and - are for their charging. You possibly shorted it when inserting into charger. Older lights could not reset the trip, but it seems the new one can. I had the issue before with the Seeker pro, cell worked but could not charge in light. Top to bottom voltage reading on cell was normal, but + - on tailcap was zero. Had to manually connect wires to my Nitecore charger to reset tailcap trip. Seems your issue could be the same? If the new baton pro has double wall it is only using the tail - and +?

With night adapted eyes one lumen can be handy. The H1R Nova is actually 2 lumens and although I saw one similar complaint I actually like it as I feel comfortable reading at 2 lumens and I can do so for 6 days (presumably longer with a primary battery). One caveat before you read the following, I have only used the Baton Pro light for minutes so the opinion has not been tested over time, or even one night, and my eyes are not dark adapted. I think the reason for the 5 lumens (and generally higher levels) is the the beam on the Baton Pro is so diffuse that you need the additional lumens to make up the broad beam/low candela. Further, it will run for 9 days on this very useful level. I don't really have an informed opinion yet, but so far I like the blue :-D Baton Pro better than I thought I would. [I hope your got yours!] The beam is between a neutral white and a cool white which I find better for perception (and to avoid the negative effects of blue light on sleep patterns no matter how nice and crisp it looks). I am not sure of the tint accuracy yet and it might vary. So far mine seems fine. It is definitely warmer than the rather cool S2R Baton II and just a bit warmer than the standard S1R Baton II. If you look at the beam on the wall of the S2R Baton II you see a very smooth circle with spill. The beam on the Baton Pro is so diffuse you don't see a circle. The concentrated area is so diffuse that it blends in with the spill. So the Baton Pro is definitely a task/flood light with low candela, and the high turbo level is there to give one a bit of distance if needed.

Magnetic base = non-universally-replaceable single point of failure. Devices with a common USB port mean you can replace the cord easily, including getting a longer or shorter one if needed. Instead of a unique base, manufacturers should be finding a better way to seal the port. Just put the port on the bottom, and cover it with a waterproof-sealed screw cap.

If I may.. I do buy a lot of 18650 batteries for various things and generally speaking, if you go for a proper 3500mAh Panasonic, Sanyo, LG, Samsung something like that, a known brand, and it's genuine, they cost somewhere between £6 - £10 each ($7 - $12US). Have to be a bit careful buying them as many fakes exist. Basically if it seems too cheap or says its capacity is over 3500mAh it's likely not genuine as 3500 is about as good as it's possible to get at the moment.

@@jonathanmaynard8998 I don't know, really, but if I had to guess, I'd say they source the best Cree LEDs they can find, test them, and manufacture it from high quality aluminium. It should have really nice threading and machining in general for that price and live up to its IPX rating. (IPX8 Waterproof - Can be submerged deeper than 1 metre) I'd expect a good support if it goes wrong or isn't up to standard upon receipt, that kind of thing. I bet the proprietary magnet charger thing adds a fair bob to the cost, kind of gimmicky I reckon; additionally they claim to use a "customised" 18650 battery. Typically just means the charge/discharge protection is on the battery itself, a lot of them have it, but who does know if they put some weird chip in there for some other purpose.

I prefer headlamps after dark hiking. Keeps hands free and is significantly lighter then a traditional flashlight. Maybe not 2000 lumens, but who really needs this much light outside of search and rescue situations? Also not a fan of proprietary chargers like this magnetic base. Nothing wrong with small USB port that can be charged by any standard charger or power bank. If you are on a multi day hiking trip, the last thing you want is to remember to pack all possible combinations of charges and cables to keep your electronics charged.

Mybe the light did not come on at first. Because the light some how knows ether that the batter was not charged with. It's own charger so mybe by hooking up to its on charger for a few secs or moments how ever long the time was. It some how was able to check the batter to make shour it was ok and. Then it some how gave the flashlight the OK to us the batter. Again just coming up with something fast on the top of my head. Correct me if I'm wrong... This will only accept and work with Olight's so called "customized" batteries? And the battery can't be charged with a charger such as my NiteCore-D4 charger?

@Ian R Thank you for the reply. How about the battery? Am I limited to only using the Olight battery? I can't use any other battery except for the Olight customized battery?

BlackHawkPSU Typically Olight flashlights can run on non-Olight batteries, but they will not normally charge the battery internally. I have an Olight M2R and it can charge any 18650. I bought an Olight S2R and it can only charge the Olight batteries that have positive and negative terminals on the same end of the battery. I have not bought any of their newer lights due to the requirement of needing Olight batteries to use the magnetic charging.

@Ian R I greatly appreciate you doing this!!! Thank you! I love my Olight S1R Baton II, which I purchased last year, but with uncertainty with their batteries and charging options it keeps holding me back from purchasing more of their flashlights. It frustrates me because some of their other models interest me and I'm sure they are really good. I stopped at the S1R Baton II purchase and have purchased 4 Thrunite flashlights since. The Thrunite V6 Catapult is a beast! My charger is a Nitecore D4.

Great light.but not suitable for clipping in your pocket the lens faces up id prefer it facing down. Also not great to wear on a baseball cap either but overall still a very good light

Just one more reason why I cannot get into Olight, A lot of crappy LEDs with horrible tint, shitty UI, in some cases proprietary batteries, and the huge gap in between high and turbo.

Olights are made in China, but they are really good, not Surefire level good, but won't break easily

Have several Olights. Their magnetic charging is 100% unpredictable and 100% unreliable. Cleaning contacts doesn't help.

"You don't have to worry about dust dirt grime getting in an OPEN port" what? It's open, this makes it notoriously vulnerable to corrosion and grime, but, open to opinions.

There is no open port because there is no port. It has no USB port, which is what he is comparing to.

You need to find out if the flashlight is proprietary and will not charge with any other product. I don't like things like that. If there were to be an emergency and the flashlight needed to be charged and there were no charger of that brand, you'd be out of luck. I don't like that.

@@mawmawvee Dinner-fork tongue is pointing out that you need to substitute the word "battery" where you used the word "flashlight." The flashlight comes with a proprietary battery that charges in the flashlight with the supplied cable. So you need the special cable not a charger. In an emergency the flashlight will accept other protected 18650 batteries, but they will not charge in the flashlight. Further, you can use 2 x CR123A batteries, but again they will not charge in the flashlight and possibly they mean primary (non-rechargeable) ones anyway. Performance of the flashlight may not be as good with those other batteries. You can also attach the supplied MCC cable and use the light while the proprietary battery is charging from a power bank. The best way to obtain a spare cable it to buy another Olight, e.g the S1R Baton II, especially when there is a sale. Keep one cable in your kit bag where you keep electronics and hang the other one from the side of your file cabinet or refrigerator. The round cable end will stick to the metal. Then you always know where it is. If you want to read the manual there is a PDF of it at OlightWorld.com in the download tab for the particular flashlight. I am not sure why they are no longer on the OlightStore site.

Wow! Donald Strader, Thanks for taking the time to explain all of that to me like this. Very nice of you to do that. In short, I don't think I'd want that sort of flashlight. Perhaps other people didn't like this flashlight either. LOL! Or, perhaps it had flaws that make things about it not good in use. Who knows. Thanks again.
