William DeVaughn is the original writer and singer of “Be Thankful for What You Got”. Curtis Mayfield, in fact, never recorded the song. His “Diamond in the Back” is simply a miscredited version of DeVaughn’s song. The singers have very similar vocal styles, instrumental backings, and lyrical content. Mayfield’s popularity by 1974 quickly caused people to attribute the song to him. For a Curtis classic, try "Superfly". It's a funk classic.

This song has such a powerful cultural context. In order to fully understand you need to see what 70's gangster white walls look like. In that era there was a vinyl leatherette covering that could ordered by the salesperson. On the classic Cadillac Coupe de Ville, an enormous car with a huge 8 cylinder engine, that covering could be extended across the back window with the exception of a diamond shaped cutout, hence the "diamond in the back". This was the era of the wide brim hats adorned with a large feather, the maxi-coat, the 6 inch platforms for men and the slick gangster style bop strut with a distinct lean to one side. In unguarded moments our former president, Barack Obama had a mild version of this walking style. Hip hop later adapted some of the elements of that era and took it in their own direction. This song shows off a pace, instrumentation, and groove specific to a set of street values, lost to time. Curtis Mayfield was a "king" in that era, although his career extends well beyond it in either direction towards the 60's with the Impessions, as well as into the 80's. He did the soundtrack for a classic film starring Dianne Carroll called Claudine. The soundtrack, performed by Gladys Knight and the Pipe in their post-Motown era contains the DIVINE song The Makings of You. It will melt you like butter in a hot summer kitchen. I believe Curtis later covered it himself. You have not done enough of either of these artists AND the film Claudine is worth checking out as well.

Yes this is smooth but it's by William DeVaughn - Be Thankful for What You Got. I've yet to hear y'all review more smooth music by WAR - All Day Music and also Summer.

When I hear this song the air and the feeling changes to calmness it’s 1973 and I’m on my bycicle or I’m in my brothers blue Chevy van with his 8 track cassette at age 10.😊

Wow, haven't heard this since I was a kid. Sounds as good today as I remember it back then. My two older brothers were teens in the 70's. One played bass in a funk band. I'm almost sure I remember them covering this. Other brother had a big vinyl record collection with lots of songs like this he played all the time. So, what started out for me as background music, looking back, was actually a big part of my upbringing.

The song is actually called Be Thankful For What You Got and this isn’t Curtis Mayfield singing it. “2021) "Be Thankful for What You Got" is a soul song written and first performed by William DeVaughn. The record sold nearly two million copies on its release in spring of 1974, reaching #1 on the U.S. R&B charts and #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 2021, it was listed at No. 374 on Rolling Stone's "Top 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

Curtis Mayfield was a genius... SuperFly is one of my all-time favorite songs... and it became a big hit, as well. His writing / production skills were top notch!!

Miss all the Motown and R&B from decades ago. Quality music, meaningful lyrics. The good ol' days of great music.
