Just getting ready to fix a Poulan Pro 27" snowblower with a 208cc LCT engine (Honda-ish clone) I picked up at a great price that has a float needle problem (fuel leaking out carb overflow constantly). This video helped me a lot to see what I will be seeing soon. Your video was the first one I have seen that addresses some that have a surge problem. I don't know if I have that problem yet, but I now know how to fix it! Thanks!

The red piece at the end fixed my surging problem. I don't have a small drill but found a better method. I used a sharp pick to punch a small hole. The plastic is soft enough by pushing the pick by hand. Once I see the tip of the pick through the hole on the side, I stopped. put it back in and noticed an improvement but not total elimination. Then push the pick further seeing more tips until the surge is almost gone. Thanks a lot

I just spent days disassembling and reassembling my Ariens Classic 24. The carb was spotless, no debris or anything in gas tank, fuel lines, nothing. I've owned it for one winter, and she ran Mobil 1 full synthetic from the minute I started her break in period, to now, she's had 3 oil changes of that oil and it's golden. Spark plug spotless and clean. She's completely sprayed down with Fluid Film, and there should be nothing wrong with her. She's only ever run premium Gas, with my own Blend of Gumout Multi System Tune Up, and Stabil. But by God, she was surging and backfiring like she was left full of pure ethanol outside for years. I watched this video, and pulled that red valve out, and removed completely that brass bit. I put her back together and fired her up, and she runs better than the first time I started it last autumn. This thing is definitely either a design flaw, or a planned obsolescence for Ariens to make more money in "repairs" in small engine shops. Thank you very much for this, I was close to shooting the bloody thing and buying another.

My neighbor just gave me a 2014 that looks brand new., Still Got the nipples and the tires. Looks like it was used 3 times, Then probably sat all summer with gas in the car.b , Then sat in their garage for 5 or 6 years. Until they decided to throw it away., Other than what you showed us., There is about 10 more holes to clean out on a carburetor. I cleaned it about 16 times, Then just ordered one-off Amazon for $14. I am no mechanic., But I have learned a whole lot., I always drain the gas at the end of the year., And I always use Ethanol free fuel., Anyways, Your video really helped me get started., So thank you for the video. Maybe in the summer I'm going to put the original carburetor back on., It looks like it's a Little better quality than the Amazon one., Even though they are both Chinese carburetors. Anyways, thank you again., Today is Christmas Eve., So Merry Christmas.

I had the exact same issues from the first start up (surging, poor idle) with my brand new Ariens Compact 24 that I purchased from Home Depot in March 2018. I did the following to fix the problem: 1) Verified the spark plug gap was at .030. 2) Removed and cleaned the carburetor bowl - even though I had only run one tank of fresh, non-ethanol fuel through the machine there was a considerable amount of sediment in the bowl. 3) Removed the 'red plug' from the top of the carb and cleaned out the brass jet with a thin piece of wire; it appeared there was a small blockage in the jet. 4) Verified the air intake hole at the front of the carb was clear (this hole passes through / lines up with the hole on the red plug when it's inserted). 5) Ensure the red plug is fully seated when re-assembling. My machine runs like it should now - new.

I've heard that leaving the thing over summer with 91 octane gas from stations that don't add ethanol in the 91 gas, helps prevent clogging the emulsifier tube. Some also use a fuel stabilizer but the cheap ones don't work. I for one just run the engine every 1-2 months for 30 seconds to keep fresh gas inside the tube.

Another comment on here mentioned ethanol gas. I use only premium Shell with no ethanol for all my small engines. I never use stabil of any kind. I buy the premium in a 2.5 gallon can and if it gets over 2 months old, I simply dump it in my truck to mix with the regular fuel and put fresh premium gas back in the can. I leave about an inch of gas in the small engine tank when I put it away for winter or summer and it always starts right away when I take it out of storage. Ethanol in gas is nasty for small engines.

Because the real problem is actually the ethanol in the gas, all you have to do is run Sta-Bil in your gas, and as long as the motor is still running it will clean it out for you. It is the ethanol in the fuel that causes all the problems during storage. Look around to find a gas station that sells ethanol free fuel. It cost more, but in the long run it is worth it. No more corrosion and blockage due to ethanol in the fuel. I also use Sea Foam in all my outdoor power equipment along with ethanol free fuel. Many do not realize; ethanol absorbs moisture, and this is the reason for all the carburetor problems during storage. If ethanol free fuel is not available in your area, then always shut off the fuel line and drain your float bowl during storage or long periods of non-use of the machine. Using a fuel stabilizer is recommended as well. I use Sea Foam year-round in all my machines, but I have found it is only good as a fuel stabilizer for no more than 6 or 7 months. It is one of the best products for keeping carburetors clean and running smoothly. it has been around for many years, and many swear by it. As always, do your research. Sense I went to ethanol free fuel, my carburetor problems are no more. Hope this helps. Thanks for your very informative video. Have a blessed and safe winter everyone.

Good idea to purchase a can of aerosol carb cleaner and keep it on the shelf just in case any crud clogs the jets after sitting 5 weeks and a surprise 20" snowfall makes it impossible to get out to the parts store to buy carb cleaner. Was told to never purchase "ethanol 89 octane" rather use non ethanol grades above in the low 90's which reduces clogged jets considerably.

@scotianinmotion1 Are you sure the drill bit size was 1/64 and not 5/64? 1/64 sounds ridiculously tiny and most drill bit sets don't even come with anything below a 1/16. I ask b/c my Ariens is surging and cleaning the carb did not solve my issue; so I think I'll try following your advice.

Did you ever confirm exactly what size drill bit to use? I just bought a pack of 1/64 and they are WAY too small.
@scarfacealal7684
2 жыл бұрын
@@quillionaire I just took out the slow fuel jet last week and based on this video used Google to find a 1/64 bit. I found one in a hobby store online for which you also need a pin vise. The conversion from inches to millimeters is 1" = 25.4mm so 1/64" = 0.396875mm so I bought a small high speed steel drill bit set 8 bits ranging from 0.3 to 1.0mm. The 0.4mm bit easily slipped through the hole in the brass insert in slow fuel jet so I used the 0.5mm and drilled the hole just a little bit larger. After putting it all back together the engine was running smoothly like it did when I first bought it 3 yrs ago. The 1/64" hole size is correct.
@davecarlson9350

Nice fix! IMO the reason that idle circuit jet is small is so they can pass emissions testing...lean means passing the test but shitty results for the consumer. As the engine breaks in, it needs a bit more fuel to run properly but the small diameter makes it run lean so you have to choke it a bit to get it the fuel it needs. Your fix restores the needed fuel. I long for the days of adjustable carbs...you're done in 5 minutes.

They should be that in the owners manual. I poked out the red jet aperture a few times with a tiny sewing needle put it back in and WOW like new again. I couldn't find a drill bit smaller than a # 60 which is .04 or 1/25. Tempted to plow through it with that but the needle cleaning was enough. Must have been pluged solid. You can see through the two side holes if your needle or piece of wire is going all the way through. THANKS! BTW, seafoam can do a pretty good job on carb cleaning without taking it apart.

I did everything exactly as you did, and mine still surges. One question though...did you drill all the way thru both ends of the slow idle jet or just the brass insert side of it? Drilling all the way thru both sides, it would seem, would let contaminants in the carb/engine.

Just the insert.

Awesome video. Cleaned the carb and it didnt fix it, drilled the fuel jet and it runs great, but almost too good! Its running louder and stronger, i may have drilled the hole a little too big. Will that become a problem?

I Don't think it will hurt it any. If you find your burning too much fuel, then I would get another fuel jet. There not that expensive.

Thanks for your helpful video. Do you have any idea where to buy one online, searching for "fuel jet" or "slow fuel jet" has not resulted in anything like the part in the video or in my blower :)

Tom W. --You may have to look up the Model # and research that. Try Amazon or even E- Replacement Parts. They are On line and on You Tube.

Solid vid, try cleaning the jet before drilling it though. Metal wire tie or possibly some heavier gauge electrical wire would work. Worked for me

I Don't see any kind of seal. I think it just slid or snapped into the cutout of the float itself.

There is no seal , Just a small spring on the needle itself.

Where in H-E-double-hockey-sticks can I find a 1/64 drill bit? Are there any hacks? Like a paperclip or something?
@scotianinmotion1

Paperclip should work to. Or maybe a compressor. I think that hole is way to small. Probably for emissions. Good luck

@@scotianinmotion1 I ended up buying a very small set of drill bits and found a size that worked, and lo and behold, the engine is purring like a walrus!
