I'm probably preaching to the choir, but t's worth bearing in mind that it's always wise to check the entire mix after each individual element or group tweak. Although not always the case, it's best not to assume tweaks made in isolation will work in the context of the entire mix. You can do a bunch of tweaks with isolated elements or groups and often find later that your mix has lost something. And it's always wise to do an A/B with your previous mix, in multiple different listening environments, or one you trust (like on a car system) - often you will find you will need to dial back tweaks to find a mix that is somewhere in between the original you wanted to fix and the heavily mixed/tweaked version you've ended up with. I guess bottom line to what I'm saying is trust your ears and feeling first, even if logically the mix adjustments make sense. Great video series, keep up the good work!

Awesome video's man. Lots of useful tips for this genre. Hands-on and advanced enough compared to other tutorials! I would've gotten insane during lockdown without Ableton Live and my drum machines, mastering was/is my lockdown project. Just curious, how much does it cost to get mix feedback from Mattias (or alternatively, from yourself)? I'm not sure if you've mentioned it somewhere.

Really cool, useful series. Nice to see the analytic way of approaching a mixdown to clean it and hearing the changes. Do you always group all your tracks into a "false master" type scenario to run your whole mix throough limiters etc.? What's the advantage to this?
@OscarUnderdog
3 жыл бұрын
For me it let's me confidently match my track's RMS with a reference track, to make mix balance decisions! The main drawback is not using sends, which I've gotten used to by using parrallel effect racks instead.
@keithforrester82
3 жыл бұрын
@@OscarUnderdog ah right ok. Would you take all processing off before final mix down and mastering?
@OscarUnderdog
3 жыл бұрын
@@keithforrester82 I usually mix into a limiter as I expect that it will inevitably hit that final limiter a bit (not too much, like -3db or so max). I would usually remove most of my own master chain before sending to a master engineer, unless I'm very confident about what I want.

Awesome run-through, one thing I don't quite understand though: why use a kick sidechain (instead of a static cut)? Wouldn't you wanna avoid a buildup even when the kick is hitting? Or is it just for some pumping effect?
@OperatorGnosisRecords
Жыл бұрын
A static cut would work just fine I think, it's just the sidechain method here adds a little rhythmical spice...
@Mr.Verdon_85

mate, a question, when u put the kotelnikov and limiter on the master bus, is it to send the track to mastering like this? Or would you send it to be mastering without compressing and limiting? Thx for your videos ... they are the Holy Grail XDDDD
@OscarUnderdog
3 жыл бұрын
Always best to discuss with the mastering engineer as their preferences differ. For most, I do imagine they will ask to take those off, as they can better judge what the track needs than you, probably.
@Mr.Verdon_85
3 жыл бұрын
@@OscarUnderdog Well yes my friend, because what you put at the end of the mix in the master bus, apart from altering the dynamics of the track, can always be added by the mastering engineer in his own mastering chain, although a compression or limitation of -1dB is not a big deal either

The limiter in here is honestly more of a placeholder. I removed the master processing before sending to the mastering engineer later. Also: due to decapitator the drumgroove already had a super super squashed dynamic range :)
@strangerting7818
3 жыл бұрын
@@OscarUnderdog thanks for replying Oscar! Yeah I know from your first video that the track is very squashed, I just wonder if there’s a dynamic range measurement in db of the premaster so me and other people can use as a reference for this kind of tracks :)

in Fraudian terms, it's your id and your superego fighting each other, and your ego not being able to control them. Reading this octatrack manual has been a strange ride that has helped me get my mind more organized, because it has to be, if you want to learn how to make it work, properly. I wasn't a good student in school, because my teachers didn't care and neither did my single parent, imagine teaching yourself organization and discipline as an adult. LoL...

What do you think about mixing directlly into your "original" or copy project? I always see people exporting track by track and mixing within the audio only.. i'm lazy and track groups make me struggling because effects in the groups are not included into the tracks :/ Not very clear but hope you get this

i wonder, what is the difference between dipping and upward compressing the mid range to just downward compressing it?
@lisotunali3807
2 жыл бұрын
The time based variables! dipping and upward compressing pushed the body up, and not the transient. Downward compressing leaves the transient alone. The first is more suitable for elements that are farther/deeper in the mix (synths)
