Pepper gave birth to this entire sub-genre (for better and worse). Love the Moody Blues. So thankful I got to see them live. Fantastic show. And I remember when PBS screened their Red Rocks show. Perfection. Favorite prog tracks (aside from the Floyd catalogue): “Roundabout” and “Carry On Wayward Son”.

Interesting. I never heard that, but I was just thinking that I never heard Jethro Tull called prog rock back in the day. I often see them characterized that way now.

Michael great recap of of this weeks live podcast on Royce in the House. Beatles Sgt Peppers along with the Beach Boys Pet Sounds played a big part in creating the genre. Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, King Crimson, Genesis, Moody Blues, Jethro Tull, the list goes on and on. Keith Emerson was the Jimi Hendrix of keyboards.

It all started with The Beatles. Thanks to them I love a lot of genres of music, including prog. King Crimson is amazing. Yes is in my top 5 bands of all time. I think the Moody Blues are the first prog rock band.

I appreciate this video. When I was a young girl I was turned on to Emerson, Lake, and Powell, Pink Floyd,Yes, and my favorite Moody Blues. During that time I didn’t categorize them. I also was exposed to Gentle Giant. Later, I learned that these groups and others were considered progressive rock. It’s rock and roll to me. I appreciate all genres of rock and love to hear and see the various styles. Thanks for sharing your views.

I think Michael makes a valid point that the Beatles gave birth to progressive rock. Sgt Pepper with the use of classical orchestra, eastern Raga, avant-garde, folk, vaudeville/music hall, & baroque music combined with rock'n'roll. Suddenly, in 1967 you had Pink Floyd, Procol Harum, Moody Blues, King Crimson, Yes & Jethro Tull being formed or reformed and taking prog-rock even further.

Hey Michael, thank you very much for the shout out, well for posting the interesting and detailed response to my comment on Royce's live stream. Very interesting point of view. I often participate myself on Scot's (The Prog Corner) live stream, and i am currently reading several books on the progressive music topic. Whether you call these late 60s bands prog or prog-ish/prog-esque, one thing is sure, they were amazing for their time

My younger neighbour's introduced me to various prog bands. Rush was a big one. Gentle Giant blew me away. I already had every Yes, early Genesis, all Pink Floyd Albums. a few King Crimson, Brand X, and some fusion like Weather Report and jazz Keith Jarrett, Pat Methany etc....... Another neighbour who was a practiced musician had a serious museum of prog vinyl. He was definitely into Marillion. Its an aquired taste, but I get it. If a song and story telling can really hold attention , for more than 4 minutes, you are getting into major prog or jazz territory

You guys ever hear of The Nice?..........1967-69 fronted by Keith Emerson were streets ahead of all the bands mentioned here, and mentioning The Beatles and prog is really quite a stretch......by the time of The Nice, the Moodies, Procul Harum, even Pink Floyd, not to mention all the stuff coming out of San Francisco at that time, with the exception of a few George Martin gems on "Pepper", The Beatles and especially the Stones, who at least had the good sense to realize it wasn't their thing, were playing catch-up...and never mind the sheer brilliance and innovation that was King Crimson, it was Brian Wilson really threw down the gauntlet with "Pet Sounds" in 1966

The Jazz Fusion works of Miles Davis in the late 60s and early 70s such as Bitches Brew,In A Silent Way, Miles in the Sky and Filles de Kilimanjaro are some of the best examples of Jazz and Rock n Roll coming together and they definitely played a big part on shaping Progressive Rock

Sun Ra, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie...Miles was in good company. Yes indeed, BeBop was the first small ensemble groups to feature the drum kit that Gene Krupa developed from the contraptions in his youth with Chinese tom-toms that had tacked on heads. It was Gene Krupa that worked with Slingerland to make the modern tom toms that are basically marching snares with no snares, but no one really thought of that before Gene. That was the kit that Ringo played, Max Roach, Buddy Rich. Krupa HO! The drummers of all the world owe him a tip of our hats.

Mike A., my best friend in grade school, loved prog rock. He loved Rush, pre-DSOTM Pink Floyd, Yes, Rick Wakeman and King Crimson. I like Procol Harum, The Moody Blues and Traffic, I guess the poppier side of prog rock. Just for fun, how about Daily Nightly by The Monkees? Of course The Beatles, for me, are the top of the heap.

Prog rock is a category for music that tended to be less likely to follow a formula established for pop music. If tended to have longer songs with longer solos dominated by better musicians because to play prog rock you got to know your instrument.

The Who, Tommy was conceptual, as Moody Blues, even Dylan charted strange territory: Gates of Eden etc now, it seems like cult/phd department stuff.vsoundwise, probably Roundabout personally.☮️ Baroque i ❤, its timeless and Greensleeves, Beck did that. Gabriel was onto something... brought it all the way into the 80's. Music is timeless.

Liking Pink Floyd really is about trouble getting women at the end of the day. When I was in high school I was basically good looking but was flabby with pimples and and I had trouble getting girls. I liked Pink Floyd because they sounded morose and angsty, After getting more exercise I slimmed down nicely and my pimples cleared up and I got girlfriends easily never felt like listening to Pink Floyd anymore. Why listen to that depressing crap when I can get hot girls? Guys who have trouble getting women because they're unattractive, or they lack a good sense humor tend to like Pink Floyd. Ever seen a muscular guy on the beach wearing a Pink Floyd t shirt? Ever seen a comedian wearing a Pink Floyd t shirt? No, because they can get women easily and Pink Floyd has no appeal to them. Pink Floyd are the incels band.

I think it's interesting that Prog is a homophone with Prague, the scene of extreme occultism that still resonates into our time from the days of Mad King Rudolph, Queen Elizabeth, John Dee and Edward Kelly. Then the strain of BeBop, WOW I had no idea when I was young and digging King Crimson, Yes, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin that the BeBop era hosted the seeds of progressive Rock. Cats like Sun Ra opened the flood gates in a less visible part of the tradition than Miles. Max Roach Trio with Abby Lincoln, what isn't prog about that? The homophone with Mad King Rudolph's city that still sports the astrological clock to me isn't a random connection at all. In Eastern Europe odd time isn't considered the least bit strange. The Police! Taking in and interpreting the sounds of all the world is the Prog essence to me. Stewart Copeland was already a world traveler with the sounds of the Caribbean and Arabia all interwoven in his drumming style when he helped form The Police. Just like Mad King Rudolph calling all the mages to court in the early days of the British Empire, and Queen Elizabeth the Second presided over the birth of all the English music that took the world by storm.

Moodies can be classified as prog, art rock, psych, or pop. Depending on the album; or sometimes tracks within an album. And of course, sometimes combinations of these. I could never figure why they picked blues as part of their name. Anyone know?

Great artists have that will to grow, explore, discover new territories...they're beyond genres...in fact they create new ones ...do we have to name them? why not...let's take "long, long, long" from the white album,Come on what's that?....same for "No quarter" by Led Zep...to me it was more about freedom at that Time...free to try...free to fail maybe...but free in their mind... following the music

What does Progressive rock really mean? Cuz if it’s what progressive really means, that don’t sound right to me. Cuz doesn’t that mean that every single song has to be different or each album for that bands songs or whatever prog band, to be progressive and not labeled as a certain genre type of music? Pfff! Does that even make sense or am a feather shy of a headdress? I mean, I shouldn’t have eaten the whole brownie 🤔🤪😂 PEACE!
