I find it interesting that you find P&V more straightforward because I often find some of their word choices very odd and can't follow as well as others. Always so interesting to hear different perspectives!

Different translations work better for different people! They're not my favorite, but I've never had an issue with them. I think they use more modern language, which can be helpful to people who don't read as many classics.

I'm excited to try The Brother Karamazov! It would be my first Dostoevsky. I do have his complete works as well though!

Brothers Karamazov is considered by many to be Dostoevsky's magnum opus! It can be a bit of an intense starting place, but I know people who have started there and really enjoyed it!

He is one of my favorites as well. Crime and Punishment is my favorite so far also. I finished it in like 3 days 😂. I need to read a few more of his books though to know for sure.

Thanks for sharing these tips! I feel like a lot of classics seem more intimidating than they actually are just because they're "classics." I also feel like I know very little about Russian history, especially pre-communism, so I do want to do some research on Russia before I start picking up more Russian classics (I've only read Anna Karenina so far).

I agree! Some books have a reputation as being hard simply because they're classics. I actually find Tolstoy pretty accessible ... yes, he meanders and people have a bajillion names, but as far as actual readability of prose, I was really surprised.

I also started with Crime and Punishment. I think it's the simplest of his major works, mainly because there are fewer named characters. Others that I always recommend to anyone wanting to start but not tackle one of the larger works are The Dream of a Ridiculous Man (~50 pages) and The Double (~150 pages). These are both favorites of mine.

Yes, it doesn't start out with a huge cast of characters, which is super helpful! Thank you for including some great other starting points! I haven't read The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, but I really enjoyed The Double.
