That "plastic" is called 'ABS' and it's used it many various applications. It's advantages to wood is that it is (of course) not very sensitive to climate change / temperature. For example if you have an oven in the living room.

comically enough, I actually do have those kind of kitchen/living room open spaces... where that abs might come in handy haha

@@CMARK-dc6vl nah i was at a yamaha store and said kawai was bad pianos and yamaha was the best. kawai used "plastic" and could't play soft. yet while i played the yamahas they felt alot cheaper quailty compared to kawai i could not hear any difference on the sx compared to cx

I have a Kawai KG-5C and me too appreciate the taller space that offer the music stand; not only about focal view but when it is all open the full sound is more rich and satisfying!

The "Plastic" is called ABS Carbon Fibre has many advantages to wood (stronger, lighter, more durable than wood, not susceptible to climate change like wood eg. less chance of having sticky notes like old wooden actions) This same carbon fibre material is used in there very expensive hand made Shigeru Kawai concert series grand pianos.

What’s yours opinion on the Kawai GM2?

It’s not better than an upright? I just bought this piano it’s coming in a few days!

I really disagree with this statement. Grands sound so much more "free" and "pure" than almost all uprights.

I currently own a Kawai upright and bought a GL 10 today. In the shop it sounded dreamy. More like blüthner. It will sound more normal in my smaller home. The base was weak, but not in a bad way. Its very soft and mellow and brings out the melody vers well. The action is incredibly responsive and the piano is better then an upright in anyway imo.

I really envy you! There's some definite mechanical difference between upright&grand. Grand is obviously superior - even if it's a small one. Upright piano is theoretically capable of only 7 consecutive hits per second. Grand one is capable of 14 hits per second. So you have some penalty when you play Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Ravel...with upright. So good choice and I envy you 🤤

Since 1980. Actually this piano hasn't been tuned since it arrived; still needs fine tuning. Marcus
